KDAY’s New Reality KDAY’s New Reality
By Darnella Dunham KDAY/Los Angeles is about to have its own reality show centered on the day-to-day operations of the stations and the employees. At the center will be GM/co-owner Roy Laughlin, who is described as “very corporate but very cool.” In addition, PD Theo, afternoon duo Tha Good Fellas and local female rapper SKG will be a part of the show. Mark Brown, the executive producer of BET’s “Baldwin Hills” has picked up the project through May 6, 2008 his production company Xonger Entertainment. “I love the show already,” says Brown. “We have full access to the characters and that excites me.” What do you guys think about this? A radio reality show? If its done properly, it could be good. After working in radio for 5 years, it was always some drama going on. **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

I LOVE radio, but don't care for the drama that comes along with it. I think PDs are Satan's spawn. I was told that KJLH was offered this show, but they turned it down. I think it would have been nice to see the other side of Aundrae Russell. I keep hearing all of these horror stories on radio boards how difficult he is to work with and how he puts on a HUgE front for the public (especially since he hosts the gospel show). [Edited 5/19/08 13:26pm] I guess most PD's are a like...ego maniac assholes. My PD would lift you up just enough and then check you to keep you in place. That place got so toxic to my soul. Radio One (who I used to work for) finally sold their LA property. That station was sucking air. The Beat drained a lot of money out of that company. I remember when they bought it. They were so happy, had the Steve Harvey show and everything. ...Then the founder fired Steve Harvey...and now his show is kicking Radio One's Tom Joyner's ass. Radio/Music business....its beyond corrupt and political

Their stock is selling for less than a double cheeseburger at McDonalds. I've even heard Steve mention on his show how he was treated at RO. They are definitely a bad company. When they bought The Beat in LA, they weren't too smart. They didn't do their research on the Cali market to find out what kind of programming would work as an URban AC. They treated it like they have in all of their other markets. Cali radio is a totally different ball game compared to NYC, Atlanta, or any other East/Southern/Mid-West market. That's why the stations ratings hit an ALL TIME LOW. Oh well....like I said...Karma. **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

Dude...they are STRUGGLING. When I left, RO announced they weren't matching 401K for their employees anymore. Bottom line, Radio One does not run their stations to compete in a market with more than one Urban. They're in the shitter. I remember we had a meeting with our "CEO" and he did the same stupid shit in Houston. He bought a Spanish language radio station and more or less lost the company 30 million. He's a real dumb shit....but he's the founder's son... Then they go and start up TV One. And don't get me started on Kathy Hughes's man Jeff Majors. That company is the result of what nepotism will do to a company. I mean if their stock falls any lower, that's room for hostile take over. Now they bought Black Planet...dumb move again. R.O. shits on their people...Our COO said once about us on air folk "Why should they get paid more? All they do is push buttons". THe whole company is demoralizing to their people. Thanks dude...you reminded me of why I REALLY am not returning to the game.

Some work for ABC radio, some for Tom Joyner, some for KJLH. They all have similar stories. RO sounds like they will go under in a few years (if they keep it up). I have heard other people say the same thing you just did about jocks not getting more money. They told a friend of mine that and he pitched a fit, then got a minor raise. What I can't understand is why they keep purchasing all of these media outlets and can't seem to keep anything afloat. What a shame. **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

Some stations didn't get that much free product...I know mine didn't (and I was in promotions). After a while, you can only get so many free cds, t-shirts, mugs, etc. You get to the point where u don't care. Same thing for concerts. In my 5 years in radio, I saw probably 50 concerts (probably more...I just don't remember). If it wasn't somebody I cared about, it didn't matter to me. Now, I did get to meet a lot of great people and celebrities, but when you weigh out everything....it's not really worth it. Besides, when you work in radio, all of your long-lost cousins come out of the wood-works. They all want the latest concert tickets and anything else free. **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

And I must say...aside from the Sweatshop conditions, I had LOVELY perks. I didn't get to go on the trips we promoted, but I had box concert seats, tickets to games, crazy promotional product, and never paid to get in anywhere. I'm still a princess when it comes to that. I will not stand in line or pay to get in anywhere. I for the most part had a blast in my twenties. My broke ass could go to any show and nightclub and drink free. Cause I damn sure couldn't afford to otherwise! Is Theo still the PD at KDAY? Jayne always had "colorful" adjectives to describe him, but she isn't here to defend her statements.

I know...it's kind of sad huh? Since we're the dorks....you have to check out what Kidd Kraddick said about the Keith Sweat radio show (The Sweat Hotel). Go to www.kiddlive.com and click on the K-POD and select the "Sweat Hotel". It's some funny stuff. **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-
