My faves back then: reading cool

Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak
I'm as Quick as a Cricket by Audrey Wood
Math Curse by Jon Scieszka
The Magic Schoolbus series by Scholastic
The Stinky Cheese Man & Other Fairly Stupid Tales by Jon Scieszka
The True Story of the Three Little Pigs by Jon Scieszka

Those are all very good books! My son loved reading the Unfortunate Event books. biggrin

And anything by Maurice Sendak is AWESOME! In the Night Kitchen was my son's favorite!

The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings Trilogy.
I've read those four books at least six times.

The encyclopedia was my favorite read in the bathroom.
Just go sit down and read and learn.
I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

Chronicles of Narnia, definitely. The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe was one of my favorite books and still is.

I also loved Lloyd Alexander's Prydain books - The Book of Three, The Black Cauldron, etc.

I was a big Encyclopedia Brown fan, and I was crazy about the Choose Your Own Adventure books. giggle

Cricket in Times Square and A Wrinkle in Time were favorites of mine as well.

hmmm, I'd say that the target is 9-13 years old; maybe they're somehow intense for children (4-8), but certainly harmless for teens (14-18)
Nevertheless, there isn't violence or/and cruelty, just some intense frights , that's all wink

I used to read a lot of those books back in the mid-90's biggrin

is harry potter scary? eek

lol

Anyway, I know what you mean: the frights of Goosebumps are more or less as scary as the "terror" passages of Harry Potter; in a word, just harmless fun (certainly not Stephen King lol)

I loved Trixie Belden. She was so much cooler than that prissy Nancy Drew (imo). lol

I loved mysteries-- Encyclopedia Brown, The Hardy Boys, Sherlock Holmes, but NO Nancy Drew! Laura Ingalls Wilder/Little House on the Prairie series, Old Yeller bawl, Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle, Ramona, Judy Blume, Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH, and in jr. high those cheesy teen romance books--I wish I could remember the publisher. They all had really cheesy titles and photographs of preppy girls on the covers. I read all the Flowers in the Attic series (and the Heaven series), too. I had to sneak-read them because my mom was convinced they were written by the devil. rolleyes

wow, i can't even remember what i read when i was a teenager. i think i got stephen king out of my system. "the stand" was the first "grown-up" book i ever read - my 6th grade teacher gave me a copy, and it was kind of a reading rite of passage for me. even though king isn't exactly "mature reading", i moved on from the likes of judy blume and narnia when i was handed that fat slab of paperback goodness.

of course, now i'm 37 and i still read spidey comic books. lol

I read a little Sweet Valley High, too, but I was in high school when those started getting really popular and for some reason I wasn't that into them.
