PUNISHING YOUR PETS? How do you administer punishment to your pets?
Scenerio: Cute, fluffy, stupid ass Turkish Angora (cat) poops in the same spot in my dining room carpet, despite the litter box being literally cleaned daily. This cute, fluffy, stupid ass cat does it at least once ever week or two, and without any known cause other than it's stupid. How does one train or punish said, stupid fluffy white cat, into curbing this stupid behavior? --Signed, annoyed with stupid animals.

Ex-Moderator | That sucks.
If you can catch her in the act, that's the best time for discipline. Cat's have horrible memories, so there's not much you can do once it's over and done with and find it an hour later. I'd check out some websites on litter box training. They may have some good ideas. |

Ex-Moderator | PS - This is likely a symptom that something is wrong, she's unhappy or possibly even sick in some way. Cats are VERY clean creatures and do not like to poo just anywhere, nor do they like their poo lying around. Any time a cat of mine has pooed anywhere other than the litterbox it's because she's been mad at me or very scared or stressed or all of the above.
Has anything changed in your household recently? Maybe she misses the other kitty? |

Better still kick the cat and the litter box out and tell it to shit outside, every time the feline fouler repeats the dirty deed kick it out. By having a litter tray only encourages it to think shitting inside is an ok thing to do.(Lets face it it is a disgusting thing to have inside a house anyway!) Failing that shoot your cat and get a dog. Happy is he who finds out the causes for things.Virgil (70-19 BC). Virgil was such a lying bastard!

Only on Fridays I just have a thing about cats, they are not stupid so can be taught to things just like dogs, and that includes deficating and urinating outside. Or if possible in the toilet. We are stupid for giving them all they need to be lazy and selfish. Happy is he who finds out the causes for things.Virgil (70-19 BC). Virgil was such a lying bastard!

http://www.healthypet.com...=111&sid=2 Correcting Mistakes It doesn’t take long for mistakes to develop into bad habits, so make sure to identify and correct mistakes right away. Common causes of house soiling include: The litter box is not cleaned frequently enough Your kitten was frightened in or near his litter box The litter box was moved from a quiet to a noisy area A change in the kind of litter Scented litter additives or odor from cleansers/deodorants Medical problems Never punish your kitten for eliminating outside of his litter box. Punishing him will only make the problem worse and may cause your kitten to fear you, especially if you smack him or rub his nose in the mess. Rather, address the above conditions and, if necessary, return to the basic training steps. Most cats will not soil the area where their food and water are placed so you may try moving your cat’s food and/or water bowl to an area where he has previously soiled as a deterrent. You can also decrease the appeal of a previously soiled area by placing a sheet of plastic carpet runner, double-sided tape, an aversive odor (deodorized soap, perfume) or a motion detector alarm in the area. If your kitten continues to eliminate outside of his litter box, take him to your veterinarian for a complete physical examination and possibly laboratory tests to ensure that he has no medical problems. Medical problems that may be irritating and cause your cat to avoid the litter box include bladder disease, diarrhea and constipation. |

Since your cat appears not quite a kitten anymore, it might be tougher to curb its behavior. Older cats can be absolute divas! But if you can catch it "in the act," you might immediately and consistently place it in the litter box until it gets the idea. Also, if the litter box isn't perfect, sometimes cats designate a spot that's more comfortable. Make sure that box is darned-near luxurious -- that it is cleaned often, that its sides are not too high, that its pan isn't too shallow, that it is perfectly accessible, that the substrate you use is pleasant, etc.
If all else fails, I know there are certain pepper-based sprays, etc. that really offend some animals. Not sure if this is good for an interior situation, but you might inquire as to the suitability of spritzing the area where your cat dumps. [Edited 5/9/08 6:47am] Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

this reminds me of a couple I knew who kept some birds in a a cage in their dining room. The birds would shit straight on the wall and scratch all their seed out onto the floor. After the first time those fuckers would have been evicted!

Has anything changed in your household recently? Maybe she misses the other kitty? I honestly think he doesn't even notice Adrian is missing. Like, at all. Except the first week when he got really really needy.

OK, I'm violating at least 3 of the rules above, which I'll address. The food and litterbox are close to each other (less than 5 feet apart). I keep both out in the garage, originally to encourage the cat to go through the kitty door---he can pick and choose where the shit, but he can't choose to NOT eat--so it worked in getting him through the door. I guess, it's time to move the food back in the kitchen, like I did with the water.

We had an 8 foot rattlesnake in the enclosed backyard. All three dogs were barking and carrying on.My husband managed to get them in the house without anyone getting bitten.
I made appointments for all three of our dogs to get rattlesnake avoidance training with the Humane Society. They use a de-fanged snake and shock collars. It's for their own good. By the time the fire department came to re-locate the snake, he was gone. sp chk edit [Edited 5/9/08 7:09am]

Cats usually won't do things like that unless they're protesting something. I think it's either he/she doesn't like the litter you're using, or maybe you're not spending enough time with him/her - or maybe he/she misses its sibling.
