inspired by another thread-what were you doing when you were 8 years old? my abiding memory of being 8 was how desperate i was to get to school to play football
school didnt start till 9 though id try and get there by 8 so i could get the ball out! i was obsessed by DR WHO(no change there then) and football-though much to my shame not newcastle united but LIVERPOOL with that amazing team at school there was talk of sending me to a school for bright kids-thank fuck that never happened used to love playing in building sites and mud and chucking stones at foremen! mum and dad were always fighting and getting divorced0-poor mum! but overall a great year my fave film had to be'west auckland-a captains tale" i played that every day for a year and in four years itll come full circle and ill be a dad to an 8 year old lad!

The year that I was 8, my family moved to a new town and I started going to a new school. I became friends with most of the neighborhood kids. We were all about the same age. We'd have tons of adventures in the wooded area that was in front of my house. I was very much into sports...I played basketball and baseball nearly everyday after school with my next door neighbor, John.We weren't friends for long 'cause the boys would make fun of him for hanging out with me and they'd say I was his girlfriend. He got pissed off and stopped hanging around with me Kids
I spent that summer at my grandparents' house in the Dominican Republic. I got tons of mosquito bites and it freaked my grandmother out Oh and that was the year that I fell off of the swings and broke both of my wrists

I was drawing explicit pictures and hiding them in my cupboard. I got a new kitten. Started the third new school in a year. Just learned to speak english. Had a teacher I hated who called me CHarlotte, with a hard CH. Spent the summer at the swimming pool, brown as a nut.

When I was eight...
I bought my first comic book and got hooked. I was obsessed with Hot Wheels. My family moved to a town on the other side of the state, so I had to start at a brand new school and make all new friends. I loved listening to my sister's Blondie and Grease records.

When I was 8, I was walking home by myself, from school. It was about a mile or so. I was very proud of myself. I had to cross the freeway and everything

* I was in Mrs. Soltes' 3rd-grade class and I annoyed her with my constant talk about astronomy and Greco-Roman myth.
* I wanted to be an astronomer, a cartoonist and a filmmaker when I grew up. * My physical skills were so uneven... I was sought after in sports that required speed because I was quite the zippy runner, but I couldn't handle a ball to save my life. Also I think I'd only been a year off my training wheels. (A friend taught me after being vicariously embarrassed for too long. ) * Girls were LOVIN' the fro. * Some 2nd grader named Roger started stalking me. I couldn't take a pee without that dude trailing me! I beat him up a few times before he ratted on me. My principal threatened to "wear me out" with a paddling, so Roger and I negotiated a separation. * My friend Greta Rothman had a crush on me, but I had a secret crush on Kevin Becker. Somewhat programmatic, it turns out, inasmuch as Greta, with whom I'd sing... um... showtunes during lunch , would grow up to be a pretty accomplished stage actress, singer and MAJOR fruit fly. I grew up to be, well... Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

I had a weird, curly (not Jheri curl) almost "1970s sitcom Puerto Rican extra" thing going on with my hair for my first decade or so. And, because it was so weird to me, I usually picked at it. It got its revenge, about 20 years later.
I'd discovered girls and the pain they can cause by then, too. But, that didn't keep me from liking 'em. How little has changed, with the passage of time... I'd had my first puppy-love kiss, and I'd made my first marriage proposal (she always said, "I'll tell you tomorrow..." ). I'd been in my first fight (with my best friend, no less, Flip) and had caught the chicken pox from his younger sister. The two incidents weren't related. I'd broken my first guitar, discovered the keyboard and was slightly amused by tether ball but all I really wanted was for my parents to buy me a dog. I was drawing comic books (poorly) by then, and loved reading. And, I was still trying to figure out the lyrics to KISS' "Live Alive II" double album... I'd discovered by then, I'm sure, the "hidden" closet in my house that contained the toys of the children who'd lived in my house before. It sounds more mysterious than it was. But it was still intriguing to an easily intrigued 8-year-old boy.
