Mother's Day - a big pain in the ass I love my mom like crazy, but having to go somewhere and buy the token flowers and then be obligated to spend the day at the folks' house - and do it again for my wife's parents - I hate it, I hate it, I hate it.
And that goes for Father's Day too, but at least a fella could potentially get to go fishing and/or drink beer on that day. anybody feel the same?

The mothers of four of my friends have died in the last month. My mom is getting the royal treatment this year. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

May your day speed by then
My daughter and I will be going to TN again this Mother's Day weekend to the TN Ren Faire where she is an actor - she will dance and I will enjoy and we will hang out at the hotel and swim and relax

Be thankful that you can see your mother and give her a hug.
I had to send my mom a package and hope that it gets there by Mother's Day. It used to be a very special day, I used to take my mom out some where nice just the two of us. I will miss that from now on. [Edited 5/6/08 8:32am]

I guess what annoys me is the the ' obligatory affection' feel of the day.
To me every day is Mother's Day, and Father's Day, and Kids' Day. I see them all often, and I thank God for them all often. I don't need one day a year where I'm supposed to lay out my affection - to me that's all year 'round.

We should celebrate when we feel it, not when we feel we have to.

That's a great idea - we've done that every Thanksgiving for about 10 years now. Feels good to get the fams together - people who would otherwise not really connected

No one said to stop laying out your affection throughout the year. Just be blessed you still have her. [Edited 5/6/08 8:55am]

my mom used to get a kick out of mother's day, even if i wasn't able to visit and could only send her a nice floral arrangement. she always appreciated it. this is the first year i won't be able to celebrate the day with her - i think if you still have your mother around, you should be glad you still have the chance to do something nice for her. it might be a pain in the ass now, but one day you'll be glad you made the effort.

the only obligation you really have is that if you love your mother, tell her...

What a shame that you feel it to be an 'obligation' to spend the day with your mother, contrived holiday or not.
As others have already said, be thankful you are able to spend the day with her. Anxiety is absolutely correct in that one day you'll look back and be very grateful for having had the opportunity and good fortune to do so. My own mother has been quite ill for some time, and in fact is (again) in the hospital. I am hoping that her Mother's Day won't be spent there.

My sister and I are going to celebrate Mother's Day together this year...
Both of our daughters can't be around, so we've decided to go out for a nice brunch. Our mom passed away a few years ago.... If I get a phone call or card from my daughter, I'll be more than happy with that....

I think you shouldn't wait for this day to give your mom something nice.flowers ,candy whatever. Don't get me wrong the gifts are aprecitated. Letting my mom know that i Love her is enough. she tells me ,but i do alil something before this day. just what i think

Be thankful your Mom is still alive, mine passed away 11 years ago. Being a Mom myself, I say, I am sure it was no picnic for her giving birth.
