Yankees/Red Sox rivalry turns deadly in N.H.

I cannot believe the absurdity of this story.

From the NY Daily News:

Witnesses say Red Sox-Yankees spat preceded N.H. killing
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Monday, May 5th 2008, 1:42 PM

NASHUA, N.H. - After a Red Sox-Yankees argument spilled outside a bar, a Yankee fan aimed her car at a group of people to scare them and didn't brake, hitting and killing a man, authorities and witnesses said.

The Yankees fan, Ivonne Hernandez, was arraigned Monday on reckless second-degree murder and drunken driving charges and was held without bail. She did not enter a plea.

Hernandez, 43, was speeding early Friday toward a small group that included the man, Matthew Beaudoin, 29, and never hit her brakes, a prosecutor said Monday.

"She accelerated at a high speed for about 200 feet. She went directly at this group of people," prosecutor Susan Morrell said. "She indicated to police that she wanted to scare this group of people. She thought they would get out of the way."

Beaudoin died of massive head trauma at a hospital, Morrell said.

Hernandez, of Nashua, was arrested at the scene. She said she had been drinking and refused to take a breath-alcohol test, said Morrell. Hernandez said she had been in an argument with the group.

Hernandez's public defender, James Quay, did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

Authorities won't describe the argument, but witnesses said it heated up when Hernandez identified herself as a New York Yankees fan. Like the rest of New Hampshire, Nashua, 45 miles northwest of Boston, is Red Sox country.

Bartender Tanya Moran said the argument spilled outside, and at least one person in a group that included Beaudoin began chanting against the Yankees when they saw a Yankees sticker on Hernandez's car.

Hernandez allegedly gunned her car and struck Beaudoin and Maria Hughes, 21. Hughes had only minor injuries, which Beaudoin's sister Faith said was because her brother shielded Hughes, a friend.

Yikes! shake Shades of Summer of Sam.

My wife has long suspected New Hampshire folk are bored, overzealous nuts -- as their license plates might suggest. I defend them, but...

Ugh, Yankees fans just can't let it go disbelief

Ok I was being sarcastic there. But really, people take this crap soooo over the top. I like to joke around about it with Jersey but I would never want to run him over for THAT.

There were a couple Yankee fans at Fenway and they got pizza slapped...seriously some dude slapped them across the face with a piece of pizza. Someone else I know went to Yankee stadium and got rocks thrown at them eek It's just BASEBALL people!!! The rivalry makes the games exciting when they play each other but don't take it to the next level.

Know what's disturbing? Whenever I hear about Yankee/Red Sox violence, it's always the Boston fans that are getting slaughtered. smile As tough as Beantowners try to pass themselves off, you'd think they'd claim at least a few victories. This pizza thing is the first I've heard of the tide turning. lol

I've spent a lot of time in New England, and just came out of a long distance relationship with a woman in Boston.

I have known Red Sox fans all of my life, and they are true haters. Like as soon as they find out you're a Yankee fan, they really don't like U. Sorry, but Yankees fans R not like that at all towards Red Sox fans.

I respect anyone's loyalty 2 whatever team they R loyal 2, but I can't stand it when a Red Sox fan has 2 get all up in my face. I mean I'm from the Bronx, have been a Yankee fan all of my life, and I explain this 2 them... and some of them are family members, ex-girlfriend's family members, friends, etc.

ANYWAY... Shit always gets outta hand, but the Red Sox fans are usually the aggressors.

Dude. When Chris's father learned I was from Boston, he BOOED me. To my face.

I think it's safe to say the hate goes both ways. lol

Um yeah!!!!!

Try being a Boston fan going into the Bronx!!!! You'll be lucky if you get out alive!!

Point is BOTH sides take it too far and it needs to stop. Time to stop pointing fingers at the other side and just STOP.

Oh my dear, dear Bostonian Lovelies... I agree completely.

But no... the Red Sox fans in general have more hate. Shit, at Marty's Liquors in Allston they even have faux Yankees caps with "YH" (yankee hater) as the logo instead of "NY".

I grew up in New England, so being a Yankee fan was tough.

Much love 2 all of my Bostonian Orgers though, especially U 2, and Painted Lady, of course.

cool

We're going to have to agree to disagree. I mean, this woman did kill a man over it...just sayin'....

I really think it's equal...and not all fans take it to that extreme either. For example you and I wouldn't kill each other over it, but two other fans may. A guy I work with is a Yankee fan and he is terrible to me during the baseball season!!!

Maybe Boston fans are a little bit more bitter because we lost for so many years....I would agree with you on that!!

Out of 13 nephews and nieces, only one is a Yankee fan. The rest R all die-hard Red Sox fans. Whenever I'm home 4 a wedding or whatever, we always get into it. They'll go after Jeter, and I'll be like, "If U want 2 attack someone, go after A-Rod". I loved Alfonso Soriano, and when they traded him 4 A-Rod, I was PISSED. I mean, he puts the numbers up, but seems apathetic about the game and the team. EGO. Jeter is the opposite. Plays his ass off all the time, and lives 4 the game.

Yeah... I'll be the first 2 admit I don't like A-Rod.

Now Bobby Abreau... he's my man.

Anyway, it's all good.

lol I can't stand A-Rod either. I think Jeter is hot, and I was afraid of Soriano because he was so good.

I think Manny is a big doofus, Ortiz is a monster and I absolutely loooove Papplebon!

Uh, folks are we forgetting that the Yankee fan was Latino? I honestly think she's just a crazy bitch, fandom might have been the excuse but she probably would have done the same thing if some one flirted with her man, or called her shoes cheap.

I did hear of a Yankee fan getting stabbed up in a Southie pub last summer, but I blame drunkenness for that. Many Yankee fans catch games in Boston, without incident and vice versa, so I think if she wasn't straight up stupid, she would have just drove away instead of feeling so personally attacked.

trust me, no one detests Sox fan more than me. That being said, it is just baseball, like Carrie said. You can still be a decent human being and participate in the rivalry. It's fun to tease people and the like, but actual physical confrontation over it? Stupid. rolleyes
