WalMart uses strong arm tactics to force their suppliers to use over-seas labor so they can continue to supply WalMart. If your costs are too high you can't sell in WalMart anymore and because of the ENORMOUS retail power WalMart has no one wants to lose them as a client. Support your local small business people instead, you might pay a little more but you're supporting a family or two. How do I know? I am a small business owner. Can you tell me how mom and pop shops are more efficient than Walmart's? Is there an answer to this question? America's political system used to be about the "pursuit of happiness." Now more and more of us want to stop chasing it and have it delivered.

Yea, the quick easy answer is that they know all of their product and can give fast, accurate, and personalized assistance to their customers. My bad, wasn't paying attention... of course there is and Mars23 nails it. Mom & Pop stores, as you call them, take greater pride in their work. Sure there are schmoes and bad businesses everywhere but that's where you and your shopping dollar come into play. Support Good, Local, Small Business People and you're doing your entire community a service. This country is founded on small businesses even though all you hear about is corporate this and corporate that. When's the last time a small business dumped 10.8 million gallons of crude into the North Pacific and had the gall to fight it http://en.wikipedia.org/w...Litigation Small Business creates more than 70% of new jobs and represent more than half our Non-Farm GDP!! (source: http://www.sba.gov/idc/gr...41-no1.pdf ) Add that to my list of infonite reasons why I won't shop at WalMart and you've pertty much got the picture. I shop anywhere else just for those reasons. this is true sometimes but also the -chevy/ford like a rock- crowd get wild in there as well. You are so right! How come their kids are always dirty? At the end of the day, it's sad to see poverty materialized and that's why I stay outta there. I can't be around ALL the down on their luck people of the city.

It's all good. Target donates 5% of their income to education, social services and the arts, which currently adds up to $3 million a week. And has a kick ass internship program and a kick ass MBA internship program. As an MBA student with marketing as an emphasis, I have done a lot of work on philanthropy and studied up on what it does for business. It's GREAT for business and it creates more loyal customers. Not sure if there is one by you. It's a European company with goals to add 100 new stores in the States each year. Very cheap food. We always shop there. It makes no sense to buy food from a grocery store anymore...to me anyway. But sometime the locale of them can be a little hood. But we are lucky to live in an in between area so no WalMart crowds are in the Aldi I shop in.

I wouldn't buy anything at Aldi if my life depended on it. I walked in there exactly once...turned around and immediately walked out. It's like some...institutional store or something. Sure, they're efficient for individual consumers in those terms you described. But I'm talking about worldwide efficiency or, hell, even nationwide efficiency. i worked at wal-mart for 2 years a while back, and i can honestly say, i never had any problems with it, they paid more than target and other retail stores in town. hey, it was a job...better than being unemployed. i don't get all the hate against wal-mart, many other retail stores do the same thing, they are all anti-union.....not just wal-mart.
i shop there.....it's the cheapest here in california (at least where i live) i buy food, cleaning supplies, electronics, stuff like that. clothing however i like to buy at other places....for myself at least.but for everyday items i like it.

And frankly, I think all the anti-Wal-Mart flack is just yuppies trying to claim intellectual and moral superiority over the poor schlubs who find it economical to shop there. I recommend watching Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Prices. I had no idea all the horrible things they do. They purposely pay their employees such low wages that they can't afford health insurance. They tell them to apply for state welfare instead of paying them a living wage. i've seen this, and i can tell you, it's not 100% true. besides most all retail stores are anti-union.

This film you speak of..is a union propaganda film. It was made to bash Walmart. Denis read what you wrote..and he plans on responding to the things you said.
But for myself...I try to look at everything from both sides, and not to start anything, but I feel you should look at things from both sides as well. It sounds like to me that you are basing everything off this film. But...Walmart pays bills for my son, puts food in his stomach, a roof over his head and takes care of his needs.[/quote] ----- I AGREE WITH YOU!!! [Edited 5/11/08 11:48am]
