Co-nod I was thinking the same thing. Kids are slaves to technology and do not venture outside anymore. When I was growing up, during the summer, we'd leave the house early in the morning and be gone til 8 or 9 at night, spending the WHOLE day playing in 100 degree temps like it was nothing. No wonder kids are so obese. disbelief

I remember days like that...and when it got to hot, we put on the sprinkler or went to the pool. biggrin

Don't forget the classic Slip 'n Slide. I can't believe how easily amused we were. Nowadays, if you gave a kid a slinky, some jacks, or even a Rubiks cube, or Easy Bake Oven, they'd look at cha ass like you were crazy. lol

Slip n Slides were fun...but my Mom would get so pissed how it ruined the grass.

Everything everybody else said. A 12oz can of soda and a bag of cheetos was 50 cents. Berry trees were everywhere. Commercials were only at the beginning the end and maybe every 15 minutes into a show, and they lasted a couple of minutes.
Being able to see movies in full after they've left the theatres. Money was only green and white, and you could buy something for a penny, I forgot what but something.

But for some reason, what stands out the most, is how kids use to play outside. Riding their bikes everywhere, not coming in until the street lights came on. I just don't see that anymore. I guess kids are more interested in the internet and video games. confused

I was thinking about that too. Also, technology and the fact that I think the humor used in media - tv and movies especially - has become so mean-spirited.

Airplane travel used to be so much more social. I used to love seeing my grandparents greet me and my parents at our arriving gates, and touching farewells right before we boarded our return flights.

Those days are gone. disbelief

You two are starting to sound ... normal.

I was a kid in the 90s. I guess people would expect me to say "not much", since technology was on an up and running course at the time. From where I see it, the changes have come socially with children. When I left middle school, that's when all the metal detectors and such started to come up. That's when school violence began to rise. I mean, we had teeny tiny little instances of rival gangs and whatnot, but, they'd always be coming from other schools to bother some of the older kids. (this was around '94/'95.) When I graduated ('99) it seems like all hell broke loose that Summer. Just like now, I never thought I'd be in a time where 2 dozen plus people in the City of Chicago would be shot and killed. And for what? Turfs, retaliation violence, gang beefs. That, and the fact that where I live/commute, the attitudes of some of these young girls! They're twice as smart-assed, dirty mouthed, and vulgar! But it's not all negative. I think the greatest change in the world since my time as a kid (which in some cases is hardly over..lol) would be the availability of educational information. Kids don't have to turn to books alone. They can get updated information with the click of a mouse. It doesn't have to be outdated, either like it sometimes was with the books. I remember the days when kids in my class had to depend on the copier, the encyclopedia, and MAYBE a PC. Good times, good times.

When I was a kid, which was not awfully long ago, we used to play in the summer time from sun up till sun down. These days I really don't see too many kids playing outside.

Well, thanks for reading much more into the picture than what I meant. All I meant was to remind that humanity has a huge impact on the world, much more than can be set right.

If that's a liberal point of view, then thank you, cuz it is at least sane to acknowledge it excists.

ooh, look! A chip on yer shoulder! It's the Kyoto treaty.
