I've never cooked for a guy I was dating before. It's rare I cook for anyone. Except sometimes my friend who lives upstairs. And that's usually baking that I have to force on him so I don't eat it all. I make a lovely apple ginger scone. And a great veggie chili. And I do wonders with stir frys and curries and such. My next attempt is to make BBQ mock duck. Our favorite vietnamese place that made it went out of business, so I'm gonna try to duplicate it. BBQ sauce, mock duck, peppers, onions and pineapple on rice. drool

What the fuck is mock duck??? (sorry, I couldn't resist wink )

Pressed wheat gluten. Without the funny duck skin molding you'd call it seitan. It's a meat alternative. I don't cook meat.

biggrin

I'm afraid most pictures of it online are quite unsavory looking, but prepared right it's delicious! Of course, raw meat is freaking disgusting looking too. So there.

mock duck is pretty popular in mpls! i never really had it in at any restaurants in chicago, but it seems to be a staple meat option in just about every asian restaurant in mpls. it's pretty ugly stuff, but like carrie said, meat isn't exactly beautiful to look at anyway. great taste and texture, though...especially with a nice chili or sweet'n'sour sauce! drool

Nope. I'm not even a full-blown vegetarian, I just don't cook meat. I eat beef, seafood, fish and bacon still, but only once a week or so and only when I'm eating out or when it's served by someone who's invited me to dinner.

Keep in mind that my thread was addressed to those who "don't burn." lol

Here are the meager offerings that come to mind:

Harvest chicken -- Grilled chicken with a spicy-sweet twist -- so named because I usually cook it in the autumn, often as part of a salad I whip together.

Chicken marsala

"Shrimptofer" -- a shrimp pasta dish with a little somethin' extra. I debuted this at a family reunion, a few years back, and my aunts and cousins were amazed. "Our non-cookin' brother/uncle's son made THIS?" touched Good times.

Mean green beans -- brought this to a church picnic one time, and folks lapped 'em up.

The Double Chocolate Goodness -- Double-chocolate pound cake, coffee ice cream, whipped cream and a tall glass of water. lol

That just sounds SINFUL!!!! lick

Only when I add the dark chocolate sauce. innocent

Once I perfect the BBQ mock duck recipe I'll have to make it for you and Darin. It was my FAVORITE dish at the Lotus and now the Lotus is closed. sad The other Lotus in Loring Park is still open I believe, but I asked them and they don't make it there. pout

I'd probably make something Italian for a new lover. I make incredible desserts too, if I do say so myself. My favorites are my red velvet cake and my Italian cream cake.

But for a hearty meal, I would make homemade chicken pot pie. My friends often request me to make that for them.

Oh, it is, although there's nothing really Italian about it. But it's loaded with eggs, buttermilk, coconut, and pecans, with a delicious cream cheese frosting. Absolutely fantastic.

Chocolate covered raspberry and cheesecake pie
Goat Cheese and Veggie quesadilla's
roasted potatoes with pine nuts

...pretty much anything vegetable. I ALWAYS burn meat. I just don't know how to cook meat. I'm always afraid of tape worm so I cook and cook and cook it until it's a dried turd. lol

Yeah, I live in the area and noticed it was gone within the last month. I wonder if they're clearing out the stores? I heard Calhoun Square is getting revamped. Condo's or something. I've only eaten there once and thought it was mediocre. Kihn Do is Vietnemese and really tasty!

Contrary to "somebody's" belief, some younger women can STILL "burn."
So, if you were cooking a special meal for your significant other what would it be?

Mine is:

Cornish game hens in an orange glaze stuffed with wild rice and ham
Honey baked ham
5 cheese mac & cheese
Sweet potato souffle
Broccoli cheese casserole
Fresh green salad
Peach cobbler with Blue Bell Homemade Vanilla ice cream

So ladies and gentlemen, what would you prepare for your better half to knock their socks (and hopefully the rest of their clothes) off???? lol

Certain things there were mediocre. But certain things were DAMN GOOD! (Like my BBQ mock duck.) It was my quick take-out comfort food. Also, I could go there anytime it was open and never wait to be seated. Which is probably why they closed down. confused

Well, um I like to cook lots of things but hear are a few..

PR style... Penil (pork shoulder), white rice, and beans with a nice salad and tostones, or pasteles. I make these better than my aunts and my mom... and they CAN cook biggrin
my secret is in the homemade garlic paste and homemade sofrito.

Seafood... um, lets see, I make a baked salmon with seafood stuffing topping, and cream sauce I usually pair that with asparagus and pasta or wild rice.
Baked orange and ginger shark steaks, I love it with plain rice and stir fried veggies w/ pineapple.

My favorite lol is actually cod fish salad with Octopus on the side lol I know it doesn't sound appetizing, w/ boiled yams and breadfruit. With fried dumplings.

I can make a mean bananas foster, I prefer it with spiced rum and homemade icecream, or deep fried icecream with freshly made dark chocolate raspberry sauce with lots of fresh whipped cream.
