the pain is pretty bad. Doctor gave me demerol cause the lortab wasn't even close to helping, but the demerol isn't doing much either. I'm going to double up the dosage until my primary doctor can talk to Erin.

Did they give you demerol tablets? I have horrible migraines and a doctor gave me those once for pain. Not only did they not help, but they also made me puke. neutral

Supposedly they are rough on the stomach.

Feel better soon. hug

That's probably not a very good idea, especially with a T&A. There's swelling in the throat, and you wouldn't want to fall asleep and obstruct your airway with too much narcotic. It's better to be in discomfort than risk apnea.....
Eat/drink icey type of drinks, like slushies (stay away from red drinks, it masks bleeding) and popsicles, as that soothes and helps reduce swelling.
Patients can bleed weeks after surgery, so avoid crunchy stuff that can scratch the throat.

Get well soon!

I just realized you had a septoplasty, also. DO NOT TAKE ANY MORE NARCOTIC, than prescribed.
You have a double whammy: swelling in your throat and nasal area.
Narcotics are central nervous system depressants and slow the breathing
and respiratory rate. In a hospital, you can be monitored with pulse oximetry.
At home, there's no way to monitor your breathing and oxygenation when you fall asleep and are taking narcotics.
Hate to give you a pep talk, but you're going to have to tough it out.
It's better than not breathing..... eek
Sleep in a recliner or on a bunch of pillows, so your head stays elevated.
I'm surprised both of those surgeries were done together.
You're at a high risk for breathing problems.....
If it were me, I'd just take extra strength Tylenol.

wink

The surgeon approved doubling the Demerol dose.

I wish you'd had someone like Phil around to take care of you. sad

The same happened for Chris - for the first two days he was talking fine and we were totally impressed. Then last night and this morning the pain and swelling really kicked in.

You and me both. Though Mr. Fussbucket would probably drive me crazy especially if I could not talk. he already asks me a million times a day, "what are you thinking? and "Are you ok?".... giggle God I love him and miss him right now mushy

Anywho..... yes the pain and uncomfortable feelings will suck for awhile.

I'd make frequent checks, to make sure he's breathing OK. Get one of those pediatric apnea monitors. At least until the swelling goes down and he doesn't need pain meds.

breathing is a ok, I require a lot of pain medication, I get it from my dad. It's a pain in the ass!

instead of one 50 mg demerol every six hours, I've changed it to every three hours. I'm also taking one teaspoon of liquid hydroco/apap 7.5/500 in between. It's def. helping relieve the pain.

That's a lot of pain medication. confused

Another point, Demeral is all narcotic. The advantage of Vicodin and Percocet is they also have Tylenol, aceteminophen, which is an anti inflammatory and helps reduce swelling besides treating pain. Surgeries where there's a risk of bleeding , surgeons don't like Advil or Naproxsyn("nsaids", nonsteroidal anti inflammatories) as they have mild blood thinning capabilities.
Tylenol doesn't, and helps healing. If he hasn't been instructed to take plain Tylenol,in addition to the Demeral, call the Dr.'s office and see if he can take it. Unless it's already been addressed.

The hydroco/apap is Vicodin, so you are getting Tylenol. But what's your dose? How many mgm of Tylenol in 5cc?
I'd still get an apnea monitor. Call a medical supply place and see if you can rent one for a week.....

I resisted posting on this thread what with the threat of hospital gown pics and all, but I mustered up enough courage just to say Jers that I hope you make it through this triple-whammy fine. It sounds like you're doing okay already, but take as much time on DL as necessary. The Yanks can get by without you...I hope. It's not looking too good right now for them. But it never is during the first two months of the season.

I really should learn more about the subject. I didn't know the surjery you had would affect your ass, too. I guess Dan will have to wait a bit longer with that KY.
