man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

Or a Dallas Cowboy. I'm not convinced that Marion Barber is the answer at the RB position. confused

This was probably a salary cap move, as he has been injured the last couple of seasons. I'm sure he will be picked up quickly by another team (hint: Bears, especially if they aren't able to draft Rashard Mendenhall). If f he can stay healthy, I'm sure he will have another breakout season like he did three years ago when he won the MVP.

I saw where Jerry Jones said he's not pursuing PacMan any more. As a Texans fan, that saddens me.

He won be resign with the Seahawks, unless it's on as a assistant coaching staff years from now.

This ain't really breakin news. It has been expected for weeks.

The Seahawks just waited all of his health issues were resolved.

Per request of Shaun Alexander and his agent.

Today his physical evaluation came back ok.

It was known he was being phased out after

the signings of Julius Jones and T.J. Duckett.

He is gonna stay in the area. He is a homeboy.

Just age, injuries and line changes caught up to him.

He was a great player while he was healthy. A great person off the field.

Has a real nice wife and kids. Lots of friends in the Seattle Area.

Nope. They signed 2 RBs already. They dropped him to save dough and to move on without him altogether.

Maybe Shaun IS better than Marion but I don't think Marion Barber is exceptional.

yup. sa's been broken down and ineffective for 2 seasons now. add the number 30 to the equation and it was a no brainer. now its off to a cap-friendly deal as a change of pace back.

I think Shaun is too banged up and lost some speed and cuts.
He peaked already in his career. Love the guy though. He's a good guy. I feel bad for him.

Press Release statement by Shaun Alexander:

"We received the news from the Seahawks’ front office today that I have been released. While it really isn’t a surprise, this news marks a major transition in my life. I started my NFL career in Seattle and hoped I could remain with the team through the rest of my days as a player. That said, things change.

I will be playing for another NFL team this fall, and doing everything I can to contribute. I am healthy, energized and looking forward to beginning the next chapter of my NFL career.

I want to thank the Seahawks and Coach Holmgren for all they have done for me and my family over the years. I have nothing but respect and affection for the Seahawks staff, my teammates and the organization. I wish them the best.

I especially want to thank the Seahawks fans. You made me feel proud every time I stepped on the field as a Seahawk. I look forward to hopefully returning to Qwest Field one day to play against the Seahawks, and the daunting task of facing the 12th Man —Seahawks fans are among the best.

Finally, Valerie and I want everyone to know that Seattle is home for us, and it will remain so no matter where I play next. We have made far too many wonderful friends to say goodbye. My family will remain in the Seattle area, and when my days in the NFL do eventually come to an end, I plan to retire here. Our hearts are woven into the fabric of this community, we are blessed to be part of it, and we enjoy contributing to it in every way we can.

Thank you, Seattle. You have become a part of me and you will forever remain in my heart."

Seahawks release Alexander

SEATTLE -- Shaun Alexander's stellar career with the Seahawks came to an unceremonious end late Tuesday, when the team's all-time leading rusher was given his unconditional release.

The club was waiting for Alexander's surgically repaired left wrist to heal before releasing him, and Alexander was cleared after visiting the doctor earlier in the day.

"This is an extremely difficult decision," club president Tim Ruskell said. "Probably one of the toughest decisions I'll have to make in my professional life. And I respect Shaun. ... But in my job, you have to stay focused on, OK, what is best for the football team."

In a statement, Alexander offered, "While it really isn't a surprise, this news marks a major transition in my life. I started my NFL career in Seattle and hoped I could remain with the team through the rest of my days as a player. That said, things change.

"I will be playing for another NFL team this fall, and doing everything I can to contribute. I'm healthy, energized and looking forward to beginning the next chapter of my NFL career."

Alexander, who will turn 31 in August, has been a big part of some of the best chapters in the Seahawks' history -- especially during the team's run to the Super Bowl in 2005, when he was voted league MVP after scoring a then-record 28 touchdowns and leading the NFL in rushing with 1,880 yards.

It's not out of the question that Alexander will someday be added to the team's Ring of Honor at Qwest Field -- where he had some of his most productive games.

"Who knows? Maybe down the road someday, I hope I'm still here when he enters the Ring of Honor at Qwest Field," Ruskell said. "Because he's had so many great memories for us at that stadium."

The speculation that Alexander's days in Seattle were numbered began to intensify last month after the Seahawks signed running backs Julius Jones and T.J. Duckett in free agency.

Tuesday, KJR-AM reported the release could come as soon as today, citing a family member as the source for the information.

Reached on his cell phone, Alexander declined to confirm the reports.

"I haven't heard that," he said. "I've just seen the stuff that has been in the paper lately."

Asked if the team had told him he was about to be released, Alexander paused, took a deep breath, chuckled briefly and offered, "I've got to go."

Alexander is gone, in large part, because he was hampered by injuries the past two seasons and his production diminished significantly. Alexander ran for 896 yards and seven touchdowns in 2006, when he missed six games with a broken bone in his left foot. Last season, when he missed three games because of a sprained left knee and played the rest of the season with a broken bone in his wrist, Alexander ran for 716 yards and four touchdowns.

Alexander closed his statement by saying, "Thank you, Seattle. You have become a part of me and you will forever remain in my heart."
