Looks really slim for Marylin. I really don't recognize her in this pic.

I am fairly certain that is not Marilyn Monroe. I am a huge MM fan, have all her films on video, tons of books, collectibles, etc. I have never, ever seen this photograph before...

hmmm

I stand corrected. redface

I just pulled out one of my Marilyn books and looked up Richard Avedon in the index. Sure enough, it's her. Interesting despite all the books, posters, and coffee table books I have (I even went to the Marilyn exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum); I've never seen that photo before.

I have about 30 books, but none of them have these Avedon pictures... Do you have a book with these pics?

I know the other more well-know Avedon photo:

but not these. (I'm still a big MM fan, but I'm not an "active" fan, if that makes sense...)

Some of my MM stuff is still at my parents' house so there may be a book there that has them, but I doubt it b/c I really didn't recognize any of those photos except the one on the bicycle. None of the books I have with me in NYC have them.

From the rest of the series Avedon shot for Life, with Marilyn posing as other great sex symbols:

As Theda Bara:

(RARE)

As Clara Bow:

As Marlene Dietrich:

As Jean Harlow:

(RARE)

As Lillian Russell:

Avedon pics in general are notoriously hard to reprint, because the licensing is a nightmare.

He did so many classic shoots with her, it's hard to count. He also shot her Life covers from April 20, 1959 (in character as Sugar Kane) and November 9, 1959 (in a black dress, jumping against a blue background).

I love the fact that she had some curves. I remember reading a quote by Elizabeth Hurley, (a whore trying to be an actress) "I would kill myself if I were as fat as Marilyn Monroe".

I forget that there was ever a time when an attractive woman was one that wasn't built like a teenage boy.

I like the pictures Andre De Dienes took of her before she "turned into" Marilyn.

i love this picture of her. It was part of the Brooklyn Art Museum's exhibit on her some years back. For some reason, I remember seeing it in color. confuse Anyway, the caption that went with the photo said something about how you always knew when Marilyn did and didn't want her photo taken and that particular photo was taken after a photo shoot when everyone was packing up.

I guess the jist of it was that Marilyn Monroe came alive for the cameras and when the cameras were gone (or getting ready to go) a whole other Marilyn existed.

One of my cousins idolizes Marilyn Monroe as a fashion icon, can anyone name some good photo collections of her? Her birthday is coming up and I would like to get her a Marilyn Monroe photo collection book.

I have over 30 photobooks, and there`s some you SHOULD get...

"Marilyn among friends" (gorgeous pictures by Sam Shaw)

"Marilyn in her own words" (the George Barris beach-session)

"Milton`s Marilyn" (VERY good quality, huge pictures)

"Marilyn" by Norman Mailer (A biography, but many good pictures, a classic)

"Marilyn and the camera" (a big, glossy collection of pictutes)

and if you can afford it

Madonna's Material Girl video was a total knockoff of Marilyn's Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend (from Gentlemen Prefer Blondes), too. (You probably knew that, right?)
