5th Grade school projects

It looks like that time of the year where, here at least, is the annual 5th grader project commences. Every year all 5th graders are charged to make a replica of one of the California missions as their end of the year project. What are some of the "standard" projects that grade schoolers must do in other parts of the country?

Same project for my daughter and she was in 5th grade 3 years ago. She decided to build the Santa Barbara mission.

My son's 7th Grade Science Project: Newton's Laws of Motion demostrated with a model rocket. He's just interested in launching the rocket, not writing the report. Mommy's pushing him to complete it by the 30th.

The big 5th Grade project at my school was making one's Iowa History Book. We learned all about our lovely state and made very fancy book covers for it. It wasn't just a little book with paper covers, oh no, this was like a whole semester project: maps, Native American history (b/c of the Kiowa Tribe and the Hawkeye state and all that), white people history, state motto, song, flower, famous Iowans (Herbert Hoover confused ), etc. My dad still had his Iowa History book when I did mine and I modeled my cover after his--two pieces of plywood with significant symbols of Iowa on the front. (Damn, I grew up in a hick town. lol)

hmmm I wonder if my parents still have my Iowa history book.
The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.
