You can "get by" fairly well on $100 a day. That's usually what I plan for when I'm vacationing abroad, unless I know I'll need more for specific things. That generally allows a bit of fun by being frugal on some things and being able to be a bit more frivolous with others.

When are you goin? hmmm

lol j/k. I actually could afford it right now. The coffee shop job and my spending habits have given me a considerable savings right now. I'm proud of the work I've done. But it's earmarked for a vacation for me later in the year. I'm either going to Thailand, Bali or Belize. I'm still deciding.

Can someone tell me on average how much money I should take. Or should I say, how much money should I have saved.

8 days in the London area and 5 days in Amsterdam.

I'm getting a little nervous.....

London is going to be expensive. I think we alloted appx 100 per day. That included transportation, food, shopping and going out. Trust me it's NOT a lot. I would see if you can get a Train pass for the underground. That will save you a bit. Shame Natisse isn't there, she knows good places to eat on the cheap. Stay away from Herrods as you can drop money easily or if you are planning on going (I Highly recommend it..and you CAN grocery shop at Herrods...damn that Saffie!) take extra cash!

Amsterdam is a bit cheaper as the Euro is closer to the Dollar. But we still allotted 100 per day. We never took public transport while we were there. You can almost walk anywhere. Rent a bike for the time you are there and you'll have no problem. Hermanought to be able to guide you to the cheap eats, but I found cheap eats almost everywhere. FEBO can be your best friend! nod Therre's a lot to eat there...not too much to buy...though there are some interesting stores to go into.

London will be far more expensive than A-dam.

Bring a debit card or credit card for sure. The exchange rate at the tube is not great-- you loose alot of money exchanging money there.

I would say a thousand lol at least, and that's being frugal. lol

You don't know how happy I am that you said $1000.....I hope you mean $1000 dollars not pounds. eek

I'm thinking $1000 and about $1500, that I shouldn't be spending, on a credit card, hopefully just for emergencys.

Woo hoo!!!!!

Groovy, that sounds about right. I have already paid for all my flights. I just have to pay for my hotel stay in Amsterdam which is really cheap 'cause that's how I roll. I just hope there aren't any bed bugs.

DUDE! I had these crazy ass big hairy spiders in my room and outside my window. The next morning we cleared the webs out from the windows and the management took care of the ones on the ceiling. Great Place other wise (The Citadel).

Anyways, Miguel. Are you going to try riding a bicicle in Amsterdam?

I am going to be SO dead. Pinkpop with Lars and Aksel.
Then Amsterdam with Miguel. And probably Lars. I dare him.

Rail passes are much much much much cheaper to buy stateside by the way.
You can save a ton buying them online here.

I researched that and it was easier to fly to Amsterdam than rail it. My only dilemma is when I get back from Amsterdam I have 2 more days in the London area. I don't know if I should rent a car again. From the 5th to the 15th or so I rented a vehicle.

Why are you doing that? That can be very very expensive. Unless you plan on going outside of London and need a car. But Gas is 8 bucks a gallon! I'd go public if you can. And yes. Flying via easyjet to amsterdam is cheaper. FYI if you go easy jet...give yourself LOTS and LOTS of time at the airport. While waiting for your flight is easy breezy, you don't get to actually check in until they tell you and the line for security is CRAZY!!!

It's so funny that you mention it. Even though I'm fat I'm very athletic. I was thinking of getting a bicycle and just losing my self on one of the days. I've ridden 450 miles on a bicycle so I can do it. Woohoo!

I'm seriously just a such a mess thinking that I'll be on the other side of the pond in about 49 days.

I'm staying with Phil and Val in south of London. I rented a vehicle 'cause there are lots of things I want to do. I want to go visit Ellie and Jon, go to OXFORD, and go to the Hellfire Caves. I don't want to impose on Phil and Val since they're already hooking me up.

Thanks so much for the advice!

driving in london is INTENSE though. eek if you're gonna do a few days there, i'd find a place to park, slap £20 on an oyster card, and use the tube exclusively while in the city. nod plus if you're up to it and the weather doesn't suck ass rolleyes, a lot of stuff in london can be seen just by walking, imo.

food prices will make you weep if you're constantly converting back to dollars in your head. just try not to think about it if you can. lol

and if you enter the dates you're going to be there into http://www.londontown.com/, you'll get a list of events, exhibitions, etc going on. it rocks biggrin
