I love the steps shows and networking but I've always thought pledging was 4 suckers. Just NOT my bag. Most of the cats I went 2 school with in undergrad were some nerds and the ONLY way 2 get some play was 2 pledge.

I'm a member of MPM = Me Phi Me and it's free. I never liked the idea of paying money to get humiliated in order to get accepted. I have a friend who just became a Delta last week, she's a grad student/professional. She was all stressed out for like two months and paid an arm and a leg. I guess it's good if networking is the reason, but I'm not that big on joining and trying to fit in. Heck, I'm a fifth year outsider on the org. biggrin

Some brother was pressing me HARD in freshman year to become a member of Kappa Alpha Psi. I'd met with the faculty advisor, filled out my application, saved up money for fees and was ready to mail it to... whomever. But for some reason I thought the better of it. Turns out they would be known as the "pretty boys," and they used to start fights only to get invariably smacked down. giggle

Over the next few years in undergrad, I was invited to be a member of Alpha Phi Alpha (too "I'd like to be bourgeois, but I'm not refined enough") and Phi Beta Sigma (too "I wanna be an Alpha, but I'm not popular enough"). The other "Big 6" black Greek organization on our campus, Omega Psi Phi, would never want my little, bookish butt -- they were all wannabe football players and suburban gangbangers.

I rebuffed all those invitations, and I'm glad. The Greeks on our campus did nothing but get drunk, have sex, fight and get expelled. Some even had their chapters suspended for assorted foolishness. I took office the Pan-African student union, the campus radio station and one of our student print publications instead.

I used to hear about a ton of backstabbing from my friend that was in a sorority. I wondered what was the point of going through all the mess of pledging just to form fake friendships w/ people you don't even like?? eek Too weird for me arrow
