Has anyone here ever had singing lessons?

What were they like?

Did you really improve?

How long did you take them and would you do it again?

Yeah they can definitely help. But be prepared to be uncomfortable, as SM said.

I took singing lessons for a year when I was in 8th grade. It was required to be in the school's 8th grade chorus. I absolutely hated them lol I've always loved singing and I still do it all the time, but I dreaded going. I didn't like my instructors. With that said, I did improve. smile I ended up quitting Chorus all together the next year disbelief

I have.. Only took them for a couple of months though cos my insructor usually had her 5 year old son in the same room with us!! and her 13 year old daughter would quite often just walk in to ask her mum a question while I was doing my scales, which always made me feel uncomfortable.

I would take lessons again though if I could find the right instructor.
Some people are like Slinkies...

They're good for nothing but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down the stairs.

yes m'am.

my last teacher about 3 years ago was an old school dude from Broadway, in the 80's and 90's did all the major productions, but broke his teeth singing behind stage performers such as Lena Horne, Pearl Bailey, Debbie Allen, Rita Moreno, Chita Rvera, ect. He's really funny, extra nice, and a hot flamboyant mess...that is, until you have to start excercises. Then all of a sudden his ass transforms into a piano player the likes of Stravinsky and he conducts class as if he were heading militaristic, fascist regime- with a consistently furrowed brow, robotic, non-engaing manner... unless you complete your tasks correctly and all you get is a "very well" duh...

I think alot of it depends on where you're located, so you can check out the "pool" as it were for the type of instructors are available for regular classes, residencies, clinics, etc.,...

Well, that's not necessarily easy without a recommendation. Start talking to people. Check out a music dep't at a college. A lot of grad students teach or have private instructors that they could recommend.

Take single lessons with several teachers, and I think you'll get a sense of whether they know what they're doing.

Then, don't be afraid to study with multiple teachers even if you find one you like. Different perspectives & opinions will really help. I once had a single guitar lesson with a someone when my regular teacher was sick, and the one thing this guy taught me in a half hour has stuck with me 20 years later!

Also consider that there are different kinds of vocal teachers. You can get a classical lesson or you can get a rock lesson. If you want to sing jazz, classical lessons might help, but why not just study with a good jazz singer, right?
