Whoops! As stated above, there's only one DAT file. Wouldn't the two shows (recorded separately) be divided into two files?

doh! sorry I just re-read your reply #18... yeah, I guess both files are together... so I guess you'd need to use some video editing software to separate into two files... not sure...

I'm just wondering though... were you able to play the file by double clicking and select WMP?
[Edited 4/15/08 20:47pm]

which is what i had suggested, i guess to figure it out we need to get into an editing program that'll open such files.

If the two shows were grouped as one file, how come I'm able to select either show from a menu? Surely there's some separation, somehow.

are you able to select the shows separately on WMP? while playing the show, can you go to Save As... and save the one show?

You have a DVD already. You want it backed up to a Thumb Drive.

http://www.videohelp.com/dvdbackup

Many methods there.

Best case would be to back it to an ISO file if you're just looking to store it. That way, you just burn the ISO to a new DVD in the future.

Otherwise, you back it up to an avi/dvix, etc. file. Then save that file on your Thumb Drive so you can play it whenever.

Still it's nice to know, when our bodies wear out, we can get another

...or you could try that ^

hrmph

however that doesn't solve your problem with separating the files.

If you're lucky there's an easy way - there should be very large files with the file extension .vob they are your video files. Try playing these files with a program like VLC media player - the videos might already be seperated or split over several files - chech 'em all out.

If not, then use a program like DVDshrink to pick out what you want, then save it back to DVD and then rip it if you want.
