awww jony's homesick thread.............. new zealand for all its splendours and its great people(and joint with aussie for the most expensive houses-tho dont get me started) lacks a certain OOMPH
i have a beautiful house in a place called whakatane which is quite stunning-next to a beautiful beach which is great for swimming, surfing and looking at octopusses(octopi??) and lots of native bush(fnar) i miss dear old britain(well i say britain i miss NEWCASTLE and DURHAM and SCOTLAND esp GLASGOW) where things arent quite so soft and easy living isnt an expected norm i miss that massive almost paltaple release of pressure on a friday when the weekend starts-down the pub in newcastle or durham i miss the cyniscism!! i miss the sense of humour i miss durham castle i miss bookshops i miss watching DOCTOR WHO on a saturday i miss big town centres i miss arthouse cinemas i miss working in"proper hospitals" i miss the tyneside cafe i miss public transport(none of that here) i miss the quayside i miss the sunday papers/sunday dinners i miss st james park i miss the weather( i havent seen snow for 5 years!!) i miss me mates (though dont tell them that!) i miss the football i realy realy miss the crack down the pub i miss my accent not being a constant source of fascination and being asked where in ireland im from!!- "how long you been here ?" "where you from"-its nice to be asked that but its gets a little tiring being asked a dozen times a day EVERY day!! of course i miss me mum but im only here in NZ for my wee 4 year old-when im with him all the above seems a bit insignificant-but hey your homes where your home is and i can get homesick every now and again (why oh why did i have a child 40000 miles away lol!!)

For you
In the Fall I often miss my hometown outside of Detroit. Seems to last just a short time then it fades until the next Fall

I miss the city I miss complaining about the cold I miss walking down any street and always running into someone I know I miss my students, watching them grow up and running up on them at 10 PM to tell them to go home I miss visiting my godfather's beautiful place at the cemetery I miss the changing leaves I miss coffeeshops and cafes and Ethiopian and Greek and Chinese and Thai and Portuguese and Cape Verdean and Puerto Rican and Italian and Eritrean and Brazilian restaurants and shops on almost every corner I miss my kids' old school, where I knew all the kids, teachers and parents alike I miss my activist community I miss cultural events almost every weekend I miss having a 1-mile commute I miss picking wild herbs in my grandmother's overgrown backyard But not as much as I missed what's here when I was there. I miss hundred-plus year old buildings, and architecture that doesn't look like it came out of a gingerbread house kit. The Normal Whores Club
