Misconceptions of Latinos

There alot in The US Media about blacks and whites. They're the subject of talk shows, have their own shows, and habe plenty of musicians.

What do we have incorrect on latinos? Could be old stereotypes or how hispanics are portrayed on TV. I know there's a big change from how old latinos act and young ones. Give your 5 cents..
Working up a purple sweat.

Well liberals, for the msot part, want them out of the country. But the good guys want them in the country, doing jobs us Americans don't want to do.

As far as Latinos in general, I'm 1/8 Latino. I've noticed a gravitation of Emos toward latinos, if that makes sense.

I wouldn't have a clue.

All the latinos I know are of Cuban or Peurto Rican decent here--Tampa doesn't have a lto of Mexicans in comparison.

And most of the ones I know are middle class, IT professionals or other guys that work on my floor, and corporate America has so successfully managed to dilute any individuality from us at work that I really don't know what misconceptions there are.

I guess the idea that latinos live 15 per house and 6 to a bedroom etc etc. doesn't apply here in Tampa as most latinos here, I think, are 3rd, 4th and 5th generations firmly grounded in Americana and established in the community already. Much of what is portrayed about them here is by their own hand, and none of it is obviously derogatory in that regard.

African Americans in Tampa have more stereotypes thrown at them here than Latinos do, and I would imagine that Latinos outnumber blacks that don't identify as hispanic by a good margin here.

Come to think of it, cuban culture here is so ubiquitous we hardly even think about it. It's nothing to picture breakfast as being a spicy omelet, plantains and cafe con lece around here shrug

I'm still trying to bring my Thai brothers and sisters to the promised land, god willing pray

Where does this "Lazy Mexican" stereotype come from? Most Mexicans seem to be very hard working (if sometimes not exactly legal) individuals. They build the homes, roads, buildings, lawncare, etc. Check out any construction site and you'll usually see a white foreman and about twenty Mexican workers. It looks like very hard work...I wouldn't call that lazy.

I think they're great. Many have made important contributions to any number of fields from music & movies to science & medicine. That being said, I am SICK TO DEATH of having that freaking George Lopez show rammed down my throat every night on Nick at Nite, the CW, etc.. It's not at all funny & shouldn't be on all the time just so networks can look like they appeal to different ethnicities. It's worse than The Fresh Prince.

The George Lopez show is OK, but not all the time, especially since it only ran for 3 seasons, limiting the episodes. Fresh Prince had a lot of episodes, but they play the same ones on N@N. The same goes with Home Improvement.

Well you've got your cholos/cholas(gang members) who are usually up to no good, instead of getting an education or working, they definitely don't give us a good name. Then you have many people receiving some kind of gov. assistance which is not seen as right either, instead of working they are getting health insurance, food, money all for free. But I do agree most us work and are very hard working, some doing all those jobs most dont want to do

nod I so agree with that statement! My Dad would work on the migrant workers trucks when they would come to Nebraska for beet season! The work those workers do, is so hard! Out there in those fields, thinning beets in 100 degree weather! I don't see lazy there!

people portray us as Lazy,Ignorant, work at car washes granted there are some that portray this stereotype, just like Spanglish it drives me nuts when i end up speaking it, it was the way i was raised. but we need to show people that we are not what the media says we are and be proud of what we are.

The more a minority is portrayed on television, the worse the stereotypes get...

That all hispanics look like Jennifer Lopez or are of Spanish descent. confused There are millions of latinos or hispanics who are Black, not mixed, not Indian, not Spanish, but straight up Black and represent their latino heritage as well. wave People always confuse nationality and ethnicity which are NOT the same thing.

highfive

Now this is one stereotype that seems to be true around the whole world: I went home to Panama a few years ago after many years away and would go to different corner/convenience stores everyday to get my sorrel drink and patties and other goodies. WHY were the shop owners always Asian??? eek lol You ain't seen nuthin' til you've been in a store with Asian dudes, speaking Spanish and jammin' to salsa. lol THEN, my Jamaican ex-boyfriend, whose father is half-Chinese also owns a convenience store in Kingston. My question is: Why do Asians own or work in ALL the convenience stores on the PLANET???? hmmm lol

All of South America has a HUGE Asian, especially Japanese, population. You see folks with names like Miguel Fujimoto and the like all the time. Lots of Japanese folks in Brazil.

I translate at my work for spanish only speaking parents. One day I walk into the office where they have called me to translate, and to my surprise the parent was Asian, I thought they had called me by mistake falloff It turns out this Asian family had lived somewhere in S. America for a long time and they only spoke their native language and spanish eek
that was a first for me lol

Yes, my analytical chemistry prof was asian, but he grew up in South America. He was so excited when I told him my parents were born there too.

And one other thing, lots of chemists and physicists at my school are Latino. There are no East Indians -- only white, asian, black and latino. The only two people from Mexico I ever knew well were both chemical engineers --very nice folks.

There are actually more asian, latino and black grad students in our department than undergraduate students in the program.
