Question for computer geeks I want to copy a TV show I recorded on DVD onto a thumbdrive. There are two shows on the disc, but I only want to transfer one.
How do? ![]() | |

there's no separation between each show?
perhaps open it in a video editing program and splice it that way? [...i think i can, i think i can, i think i can...]

The two main folders say "VIDEO_RM" and "VIDEO_TS".

ok, let's start at the beginning.
First, is your computer plugged in and turned on?

In the "RM" file, there's a DAT file, an IFO file and a BUP file.
TS: 2 IFO files; 2 BUP files; 6 VOB files.

First, is your computer plugged in and turned on? ![]() i'm the person that question was made for. because sometimes my computer isn't plugged in or turned on so i think it's broken. ![]() just like sometimes when my car won't start it's because i parked it in gear but instead of checking that, i just think that my battery is dead. ![]() or when my lights go out suddenly and all of my neighbors still have their electricity, i'll think that i'm in some horror movie scenario instead of just thinking that maybe i just blew a fuse. ![]() ![]() On the plus side, i know a hell of a lot about veterinary medicine! ![]() but apparently that's all i know a hell of a lot about. ![]()

All icons identical. When I try opening them, all but one file says, "Windows cannot open this file...". Asks me to let it go online to find appropriate program, or to choose from list. When I try to open DAT file, it says, "These files (.DAT) are used by the operating system and various programs. Editing or modifying them could damage your system. If you still want to open the file, click "Open With"...".

No, I recorded the shows on my DVD recorder. aha. do you know what format they were recorded in? and did your recorder come with any software to install on your computer (i know it's a separate unit you bought that probably is wired to the tv, but it helps to ask) [...i think i can, i think i can, i think i can...]

And the machine did not come with any software.

I believe the DAT file is your video file. Have a look at the answer here to play the DAT file on media player:

I know you're looking for the file type, but I have no idea, so I just threw out the disc type, in case that was any help. do you know if the vid was in any kind of video format that *can* be read by a computer, provided it has the right codex?
Not a clue. and, do you have divx on your computer and do you know if your dvd recorder supports that format?
Yes, I've watched DivX vids on my comp, but my recorder doesn't support it. sorry this probably all isn't helping but if i can get as much info as possible i may be able to help you
Hey, I just appreciate the effort!

Whoops! As stated above, there's only one DAT file. Wouldn't the two shows (recorded separately) be divided into two files?

Seems to me, I would need one of the IFO files, the corresponding BUP file, plus some of the other files, no?

![]() I'm just wondering though... were you able to play the file by double clicking and select WMP? [Edited 4/15/08 20:47pm]

i think that may depend on how your dvd recorder operates.. try it out though and see what it plays as... [...i think i can, i think i can, i think i can...]
