I was gonna say that Luke Cage was way before Storm in the Marvel Universe.

From the Big Two:

1. Black Panther - 1966 (Marvel)
2. Falcon - 1969 (Marvel)
3. Green Lantern (John Stewart) - 1971 (DC)
4. Luke Cage - 1972 (Marvel)
5. Black Goliath - 1975 (Marvel)
6. Storm - 1975 (Marvel)
7. Black Lightning - 1977 (DC)

Damn, I forgot GL was a brotha. And who is Black Goliath and Falcon?

Stan didn't create Storm. And also, X-Men was considered one of his lesser creations at the time, although in hindsight it's probably the one with the most potential. He was lazy and didn't want to have to write 5 origin stories for how these kids got their powers, so they were born with them. Other writers picked up on this and turned it into a civil rights metaphore. Can't take anything away from Stan, though. He's the man.

But he did come up with the concept, that was the main point. But thanks for the extra info.

Well, sure, he came up with the concept of a mutant being born with a super power. But he never pursued the politics of it. In fact, the X-Men worked for the government when they started out. They weren't persecuted at all. biggrin

Now I do remember that part lol. But again, it's STILL his creation, and you can't take that away from him, so he's legit in that right.

Oh sure, yeah, it's his creation and I respect him immensely for it. But in his hands, it wasn't really one of his best creations. In fact, the book was pretty dreadful compared to most of the Marvel lineup at that time. It was other writers who turned it into something unique. The potential of the concept wasn't realized until other people got their hands on it.

Damn, I forgot GL was a brotha. And who is Black Goliath and Falcon?

Luke Cage (a.k.a. Power Man): Began as a "hero for hire"; inspired by the Blaxploitation films; partnered with Iron Fist in the '70s; the inspiration for Nicholas Cage's stage name

Falcon: Captain America's second-most famous partner (after Bucky)

Black Goliath (a.k.a. Giant-Man and Goliath): An employee of Hank Pym (Ant-Man/Giant-Man/Goliath/Yellowjacket) who used Pym particles to grow in size; recently killed by a Thor clone in "Civil War"

who was the first female black superhero for DC? (i should know this one...)

the earliest one i can think of is bumblebee from the teen titans. she wasn't exactly a smashing success of a comic book character, though... hmmm

I think it was Bumblebee. She's a couple of months older than Black Lightning.

It was Bumblebee. She was a part of the 70's Titans East arc back in the day. And i am a little surprised that John Stewart was around that early. I don't remember seeing him in the 70's at all.

i don't remember him in the 70s either. he might have been in the green lantern comics, but i don't remember him BEING a green lantern until the 90s or maybe late 80s at the earliest...

Storm and Nightcrawler were part of a team dreamed up for DC who turned them down and than when Chris took over X-Men he did the "new" X-men that had Storm and NC. Though Stan was worried people would think Storm was a grandmother.

I like talking with Comic Book Headz because I was somewhat a fan but not a true fan, so all this extra-added info is off the charts! Thanks to all that supplied it.

Also, on a car ride from Dallas to Houston, a buddy of mine ranted and raved about the Infinity Gauntlet. This was about 8 years ago and I've forgotten a lot of it, so hopefully someone can fill me back in on that.

And the Celestials? The same buddy told me they were the most owerful characters of all, more powerful than The Watcher. Is that true? They slept in mountains, right?

years ago i was a big Xmen fan and when they did the 300th issue they had released a mag that talked about the history and evolution of the group. Even why they did the Phoenix Saga.

cool Is there a storyline you'd recommend for Silver Surfer? During my time reading comics, I never did read the Silver Surfer... but I was always fascinated by the whole mythology... galactus, heralds, celestials, cosmic cubes...

See, I love the original Captain Marvel. A little kid who transforms into "The World's Mightiest Mortal" is about as good a superhero concept as it gets. He was once the most popular character in all of comics, but now DC has let him flounder for years and Marvel keeps clinging to the name copyright for no real reason. disbelief

Billy Batson deserves better. sad

he'll get it soon, i think....the trials of shazam series just wrapped up, laying the foundation for what dc is hoping is going to be a new, rich future for the character (which i believe will from now on be referred to as "shazam", sad but true...).

But that's my point. They keep trying to establish a new status quo for the Fawcett characters, but I can't help but think the other main point of that series was to move away from the "Captain Marvel" title they can't legally use. Meanwhile, Marvel keeps using people like Monica Rambeau, Genus, and now Mar-Vell for a few years before canceling them yet again just so they can keep the copyright.

They'd be better off removing the Fawcett characters from the DC Universe and putting them back on their own earth. Barring that, I wish they'd delve into some of the similarities between Cap and Wonder Woman. Seeing them as an item would be interesting.
