At age 8 I was getting myself off to school by myself and was home alone after school till my older brother or parents got home. I would walk or bike to the store by myself at around 6 or 7 as well.

But times are different now. I'm not a parent, bnut I think the 12-13 sounds about right. I guess it depends on the child and the comfrot level you have with your neighborhood, area you're in, etc.

Yeah...a bunch of old NOSY ladies, the best kid. lol

Me and the kid had all shorts of safety measures...like code words, she would use the instant messenger as she was doing her homework, etc so I could know where she was in the house.

Its a different world but you adapt. The code word really worked. Only a person with our special code could pick her up from school, etc.

She's touch for it now.

that sounds about right for me, too...i think by third or fourth grade i was officially a latch key kid, and i was getting myself ready in the morning and coming home from school to an empty house, and my mom would get home a couple hours later than me.

of course, i had a pretty unique situation - my grandma was our next door neighbor when i was a kid, so it was like i was being babysit without being babysit. grandma would usually mind her own business, but she'd check in every now and then and if i was ever in a bind, i could always go to her for help. so in that regard, i wasn't left TOTALLY alone as a kid.

Ours are 13, 11, 9 and 8. They arrive home from school about an hour before us. As long as one of the older ones is around, they are fine by themselves for short periods. They know not to answer the door or the phone, they clean up after themselves and are generally responsible. The computer is password-protected, so no porn for them. lol

I was seventeen and wasn't allowed to stay home when my parents waned to an out of town family reunion. Dad said he couldn't live with himself if something happened to me. confused

I was 12 when I started, but only if it was for a couple of hours. Once I was 13, I became a latch key kid and was given a lot of responsibilities, cause both my parents got home from work late. My baby sister went to my grandma's, though once in awhile I would look after her too if she wanted to be home with me instead and if they were getting off work early.
