American elections are a farce. Just half of the eligible voters bother casting a ballot. The electoral campaigns themselves are mere marketing campaigns long on money, short on real ideas and debates. The presidential debates are like reality shows -- the thrill is not in the political program, but in how well the candidates fare on television. They have all the depth of a poodle. Despite the biggest campaign money could buy, Bush did not win the popular vote. In real terms, he has maybe a quarter of all eligible American voters. Some democracy... It isn't surprising that folks like Walter Cronkite are actually using the word "oligarchy". Worse, Americans themselves don't seem to care much. With big money continuing to dominiate politics, the hopes that a third party will truly emerge are slim. Campaign finances have put an headlock on your already choiceless democracy, and the current state of your media is not conductive to new political voices being heard. They love the dems vs reps game -- it's a neat, consistent rivalry, a us versus them that only gets slightly interesting during the primaries, because more undercurrnts are being felt. Past the nominations, it's just one big media blitz that is handled pretty much like a sport rivalry -- some of these commentators might as well be covering the NFL, as excited as they get as the rivals approach the big day. Canadian politics are a pretty sorry sight too, but at least over 70 % of eligible voters go to the booths, and the five parties (some of which have less than 15 % of the vote) have a place in tv debates.

You have stated the truth... American voter turnout makes me fucking sick and I fucking HATE the political ad campaigns that focus on slander rather than real issues. The Democrats and the Republicans are the same party and they get their funding from the same corporations. SUPERJOINT RITUAL - http://www.superjointritual.com

IceNine said: Bladerunner said: Am I the only one to notice that during the last 3 Republican administrations every single one has incurred a recession?
The Republicans could argue that they inherited economic problems and started getting them straight when Democratic presidents came in and reaped the benefits of the Republican party's work while causing economic problems that spilled over into the next Republican presidency. Yeah...the republicans are great at blaming democratic predecessors. Unless you're George H. Bush and you have no democrat to blame, and even if you did want to blame him he (Reagan) had a recession of his own during 2 terms. It is not the Democrates nor the Republicans who control the economy -- its the people. When the people have some semblence of trust in their leader, they tend to spend more on non essential items/products. When our leaders appear to be more concerned with special interest groups, and screwing around with our futures (ie privatizing SS) people tend to be stingy with their hard earned money. Especially when the leader is obviously more concerned with the upper crust rich than with us normal people. Ronald (trickle down my ass)Reagan, George H, nor George W were/are not concerned about the working class. They're only concern was/is to keep their rich cronies happy. People can be very astute when it comes to cash. Right now our future is uncertain. The threat of war, the fear of terrorism and a two-tier economic status quo is what's keeping the economy from moving forward. Especially, this particular war. And no matter how many times Mr. Greenspan tries to intervene by controlling the flow of money -- normal hard working people are not going to spend money in these uncertain times. No Trust -- No Spending. Period. "Use this tool to control the masses w/guaranteed success: Divide/Conquer =>No Communication cuz we are Divided =>Misunderstanding cuz we don't Communicate =>We can't Agree we only Misunderstand =>Chaos cuz we can't Agree. Chaos-an evil tool indeed!"

I think Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY) said it best when she recently said "All I know is,eighteen months ago we had a surplus and now we don't".

If there were no term limits on the presidential office, I'm more than sure Bill Clinton would have been the next FDR and had at least 4 terms! Even with his sex scandals, he remained one of the most popular presidents in history...
