The Evil Dead Trilogy

How many people here are fans of Sam Raimi's brilliant Evil Dead series (Evil Dead, Evil Dead II: Dead By Dawn, Army of Darkness)?

For all of you that are, what is your favorite of the series, and why?

It's nearly Halloween, and these films definitely deserve a thread of their own! chainsaw

(For all of you that aren't, please don't bother to post)

Okay, I'll go first:

My own personal favorite is Evil Dead II: Dead By Dawn. It is the most over-the-top one of the series, and it features everything that makes this series so awesome:

Great one-liners ("swallow this")!

Ridiculously gratuitous gore!

Bruce Campbell's physical comedy!

Chainsaws! chainsaw

The demon-possessed dead!

Demon-possessed hands!

Demon-possessed deer heads!

Rednecks getting dismembered!

Lot's of good, old-fashioned scares!

Corpse's performing dance numbers!

Bruce Campbell's Ash replacing his severed hand...with a chainsaw!!! chainsaw

Did I mention chainsaws???

I mean, this movie has it all! Sure, the first ED has more scares, and Army of Darkness has more comical one liners, but I gotta go with EDII! Bruce is at his best in this one! HAIL TO THE KING, BABY!!!

I love those movies... my favorite is Evil Dead 2.

I liked "Army of Darkness" a lot as well, but I didn't like the director's cut DVD with the original ending as much as the theatrical release.

Totally agree! While the director's cut was a good ending, I think the studio forced him to get creative with the "happy" ending. He delivered an even better ending, that satisfied the idiotic suits, but still stayed true to the feel of the film. This is one of very few instances where I actually like the theatrical cut better than the director's.

Did you get the "Evil Dead: Book of the Dead Edition" DVD?

That one is pretty cool... for the packaging.

Ive only seen II-Dead By Dawn. Its like a scary comedy (duh). Well not "duh" because I was under the impression that the first one was a serious horror film. In Dead By Dawn, look for the part where he just says .."workshed"...lol. This is one of the funniest movies eva!

Evil Dead II by far...the first movie was rather slow...and Army of Darkness seemed off somehow, it was too stupid...or more targeted at adolescents or something. Evil Dead II hit it right on the head, just goofy enough. smile

Especially when he jumped on that monsters head and the eyeball flew across the room into that chick's mouth! LOL!!!

Evil Dead II is the bomb!!

In the UK, many moons ago, Jonathan Ross had a series called "The Incredibly Strange Film Show" with an episode dedicated to Sam Raimi. It was superb and is essential viewing for anybody interested in Sam Raimi/Evil Dead series.

I've only seen 1 and 2, I still have to give props to 1 because it was raw as hell. The part that really freaked me out is when they was playing cards and the demon was calling the cards without seeing them, that fucked me up, and when the tree got it's freak on. Classic shit!

I've noticed a couple of folks have dissed on AOD. While its not as good as II, it is still a worthy chapter in Ash's saga. What you have to admire with AOD is that Raimi and crew just threw all seriousness out the window, and went for total camp. The one-liners make this movie a must-see! "Gimme some sugar, baby"! Truly classic!

Yeah, and Danny Elfman even contributed some music to the film!

If I'm not mistaken, there is a new Ash movie in the works...? Anyone? Anyone?

Unfortunately...no. I asked this question of Bruce when I saw him last. His response was "when monkeys fly outta my butt"!

He is going to be in a movie directed by the guy who did Phantasm called Bubba Ho-Tep. In it, Bruce plays Elvis Presley, who faked his death in the seventies. He winds up in a nursing home, where an evil mummy comes back from the dead to suck the life force out of the elderly residents. Its up to Elvis, and a crazy black guy who believes he's JFK, to put a stop to the Undead beast's carnage. Sounds like a perfect Bruce Campbell film to me!!!
