My friend rolled up the windows in his car and locked them and let one of those protein farts out. I puked in my mouth. I'm not shitting you. Pun intended!

Any form of lean protein after a workout is good (doesn't have to be shakes).

If the shakes make you toot, you need a different protein.

I´ve been using them for more than a decade and I have never had that problem but I read and heard about it lots of times. Maybe it depends on the quality of the protein shake, and keep in mind that there are lots of different formulas on the market, from simple milk protein ( casein ) based formulas to whey protein, egg protein or soy protein shakes. Some people favor soy protein because it´s plant based but that doesn´t really make it any better or more digestible ( it is not fermented soy, and that could cause problems).
I have seen vast improvements with protein shakes and it would be really difficult for me to get the amount of protein I need without having a shake or two.
One shake equals 30 gr. of protein. A McDonalds cheeseburger, as an example, contains 13 gr. of protein. ( That´s just an example, I don´t like McD´s ).

As an ex-vegetarian (1999-2004) I still find it difficult to eat stuff like chicken and meat regularly ( though I´m no longer a vegetarian) and it would take A LOT of dairy products or eggs to get the recommended 1,2 grams per kg bodyweigt ( or 0.6 gr. per lb bodyweight ?).
So, the protein shakes are really useful, if taken wisely.
" I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

Wow - and here I thought I was the only one who knew about fermented versus unfermented soy. cool

All protein shakes 'work', if by work you mean supply you with high quality protein.

I would not recommend weight 'gainer' unless you're seriously looking to bulk up in the professional sense.

Soy Protein works but your body is less efficient at using it.
whey Protein is by far the most readily usable protein your body can use, beating out red meat. It's just nasty and makes your farts stink.

Overall though, unless you work out A LOT, westerners, due to their diets, really don't require additional protein. Its a myth.
This is true for most vegitarians and vegans--the problem is not normally protein intake for them but iron and b-vitamins.

If you're trying to bulk up, consider doing the major muscles (legs and chest) very very hard. A good leg workout is so stressful on your body, that your body produced more testosterone to help 'repair' itself, thereby increasing your ability to bulk up on muscle. If you want bigger arms and chest muscles, work your legs out!
