As long as the Mets have Carlos Beltran, they are doomed. He is the New York version of the goat curse.

Trust me, I don't like him. I was complaining to my friend about how he is a "prima donna pain in the ass". As soon as he breaks a nail, he's on the DL for a month! pout
I don't believe he plays his hardest for the team. no no no!

He (or maybe more accurately, Scott Boras) threw Houston in the grease. When he became a free agent after 2004, our offer was the highest in terms of net dollars to Beltran (we have no state income tax). But it was rejected as "not enough money".

Then, we found out that after Beltran chucked Houston and had accepted the Mets' offer, in between Boras had called the Yankees and asked if they wanted Beltran for the same price Beltran would accept from the Mets. The Yankees said they weren't interested in Beltran.

It was an ugly, unprofessional experience from Houston's point of view.

But what happened in 2005? We went to the World Series, while Beltran broke his face. Then in 2006, Beltran was caught looking at strike 3 of Game 7 in the NLCS - ouch! We all know what happened in 2007. Double ouch!

Karma, baby.

Also working against the Mets/Astros vortex is the Mets' closer, Billy Wagner. After the 2003 season, Wagner complained that our owner wasn't interested in winning, only in making money. He was traded to the Phillies a couple days later. Good riddance to bad blubber!

While Wagner was with the Phillies, they never beat the Astros. In 2004, Craig Biggio hit a memorable walk-off homer against Wagner - in Philadelphia. We made the wildcard that year by one game. What team did we finish one game ahead of?

The Phillies.

Don't mess with the Astros!

See, why did U have to bring up Wagner?! He makes my blood boil!!! I can't understand why everyone strokes him, when he chokes in key situations, then blames everyone else! He curses at the media and acts like he's untouchable, yet they still say he's one of the BEST closers! eyepop
I don't care HOW MANY games he saves, I care WHICH games he blows! confused

That's your opinion, right?
I don't like basketball, but I don't go around calling it the "worst sport" because I know there are other people who like it- in fact love it. The way I feel about baseball. confused

I can understand that perspective from the casual observer but as someone who played the game for a long time, I appreciate the subtleties and nuances of the game.

I played until I was 30.....

You played baseball and you think no-hitters are boring? hmm I don't get that at all. A no-hitter is one of the most exciting things I've ever watched in sports. I'm on the edge of my seat for each pitch in the second half of the game.

Is Beltran really considered a curse by Mets fans? I like the Yankees (we have our own curse with A-Rod) so I never knew this.

So playing didn't give you a bigger appreciation of the game when watching it?

You need to appreciate the finer aspects of the game...the details and such. A 2 - 1 game usually means some great pitching and defensive plays.

I love baseball...it's my favorite sport. I was actually on my way to playing some minor league ball until an eye ailment derailed my career.

In fact I have all my Oakland A's gear on right now. Hat, jersey, jacket.

I even make it a family event. We get to the game about 3 hours before it starts. Set up the BBQ....carne asada, hamburgers, hot dogs, hot links, potato salad, my kids and a bunch of their cousins playing.....plus I drink plenty of beer. Then go in and enjoy the game....cloud9

If I ever get back to the Bay Area, we are taking in some games together!

When I was playing yes.

Over the years, after getting deeper into my career, kids, and various other activities, I had 2 give up a few things. Watching sports was one of them. I'm dowm 2 the NBA playoffs and the NFL. That's all I have time 4.

I only like the Cubs, because I grew up with them. And if weren't for the radio announces, I probably wouldn't even bother anymore, because I get sucked in every couple of years with the tiniest bit of hope, and then they always dash it and I feel like a sucker and won't watch/listen/follow for a couple of years until the pain subsides.

The worst part is, I always wear a Cubs hat, because it's the best/most comfortable hat I ever owned (I even bought 4 of them in case they stopped making it lol) and it's only in those years that I'm not bothering with the Cubs that people take note of my hat and want to talk baseball with me. biggrin

The Bulls and Kirk Hinrick?
The Bears and Rex Grossman?
