Also working against the Mets/Astros vortex is the Mets' closer, Billy Wagner. After the 2003 season, Wagner complained that our owner wasn't interested in winning, only in making money. He was traded to the Phillies a couple days later. Good riddance to bad blubber!

While Wagner was with the Phillies, they never beat the Astros. In 2004, Craig Biggio hit a memorable walk-off homer against Wagner - in Philadelphia. We made the wildcard that year by one game. What team did we finish one game ahead of?

The Phillies.

I only like the Cubs, because I grew up with them. And if weren't for the radio announces, I probably wouldn't even bother anymore, because I get sucked in every couple of years with the tiniest bit of hope, and then they always dash it and I feel like a sucker and won't watch/listen/follow for a couple of years until the pain subsides.

The worst part is, I always wear a Cubs hat, because it's the best/most comfortable hat I ever owned (I even bought 4 of them in case they stopped making it ) and it's only in those years that I'm not bothering with the Cubs that people take note of my hat and want to talk baseball with me.
