the mom fell asleep finally, she is knocked out, poor thing, so I quietly grabbed one of the puppies

Depends on the individual dog, the pitbull I had didn't mind us handling her 8 puppies. I even helped her birth them, had to give her LOTS of water. She would follow us if we walked away with any of the pups so not to worry her we would keep all the pups in her sight. She didn't mind at all. I miss her so much  | |
