I have Juliette and amother huge collection of his work, but I've only skimmed through both of them.
I do plan to sit down and read them someday.

HELL YES!!!

Great read!!

This man was a brilliant mind and it is a shame the aforementioned statement has been placed in the shadows due to his sexual explorations. I read this book and it was captivating!!

And I can relate to the sexual voracity!

Certainly. I have Philosophy in the Boudoir and 120 Days of Sodom and have read them both cover to cover. Sade isn't remembered for the actual writing, which is very repetitive and often pedestrian, but (obviously) more for his ideas and views on sex and gender. Sade was really ahead of his time as a sexual revolutionary.

I took "Literature & Sexuality" in college as an English minor. I had to read parts of an anthology that included "Justine", "Philosophy in the Bedroom" and "Eugenie de Franval" and "other writings". wink

I ended up reading the whole thing... reading

"Love Hurts.
Your lies, they cut me.
Now your words don't mean a thing.
I don't give a damn if you ever loved me..."

-Cher, "Woman's World"

I haven't read any of his work but he was covered in my Contemporary Ethics class. I had no idea about the guy aside from the sexual stuff until I took that class.

How anyone could find stories about the sexual abuse, torture and murder of children (or anyone for that matter) entertaining is beyond anything I'll ever understand.

I doubt that most people who have read ALL his work actually enjoyed it or found it entertaining.

For most I imagine it's like reading about a serial killer.

For a very small group it's something they actually like while others avoid some of the material and love everything else.

I dunno, lots of people love horror movies that touch on those topics as well.

Just not my thing...I'm not so much of a fan of that kinda shit in movies because stuff like that actually happens in real life.

I think most people prefer good thrillers to cheap torture porn, but what's easier to make and sell?

but I understand where you're coming from and really once people are aware of some of the real stories behind some of these flicks or once they have certain experiences they tend to snap out of it and avoid that material...or at least that's what I see

that reminds me eek
