that is a damn SHAME. i like whole foods, but it's no trader joes. Not only is whole foods ROBBERY but they have the snobiest clerks I've ever come across in a goddamn grocery store!! I've never been treated so bad - they routinely avoid eye contact/saying hello to me (but will do so with all the folks before & after me ), they don't give me my total & just expect me to see it on their tiny little screen It's ridiculous. They just opened one in my neighborhood - I haven't been yet but I refuse to ever step foot in the Berkeley one again (formerly the closest one to me). The SF clerks are WAY cooler... But enough of my rant Whole Foods doesn't have the unique, interesting fare TJ's does. I mean, they have some good stuff but you'll pay 3x as much for it, outside of the hot food bar (which they make themselves) the stuff on the shelf is a gamble in terms of taste, & their sweets kinda blow Gimme one good tasting sweet over their sugarless/flourless crud ANY DAY... I do love those mini cheesecakes though But they don't even make 'em themselves

The hot food bar is SO expensive, but good when you're pressed for time & want some real food... I hate their bakery, it's a joke. The mini brownies are good & those mini cheesecakes but if they made it & it's sweet?? It's gonna SUCK! & those fucking employees the one thing that really made me happy was that they had a NAAN AISLE.
nothing says "new whole foods location in a gay neighborhood" like a NAAN AISLE. Okay, I gained 5 lbs just READING that! Damn, I'd lose my shit in an entire aisle of naan . [Edited 3/25/08 20:56pm]

Most folks I know do a combo of TJ's & some other store to fulfill all their needs. I usually end up @ Safeway for milk, lettuce, frozen veggies, bread, etc. (their bread is too sprouty for me, & they don't carry red leaf lettuce - wtf??) But they have all kinds of good stuff, so even the unpure folks should be allowed to grab what they like. What are you, some kinda vegan purist or something?

But who the fuck can eat nothing but veggies & water ALL day, EVERY day??? I indulge more than the average person but we all have to @ some point or we'll go batty. I no longer eat the Identity Crisis chips every day or every week, but I damn sure will have bag in the cupboard!

Trader Joes is not an 'organic grocery store'. They do have an organic section but their primary claim to fame is the fact that they contract directly with the food suppliers to provide the product on their shelves, sometimes even branding the items with their own Trader Joes label or a variation thereof. Most supermarkets today are serviced by a third party supplier such as Cisco and the high costs of using such a middleman to warehouse and transport store items is passed on to the consumer. Traders avoids the middleman and passes the savings on to their patrons.
Also, Trader Joes does not provide everything that one might need to stock their kitchen; there are certain staples that you can only find at larger supermarkets. [Edited 3/26/08 15:07pm]

Hell to the yes!
Those flaxseed chips are fabu...so is their guacamole and salsa...all of their frozen asian dinners are great...the desserts are to die for...their vitamins rock and so does their bread...their health and beauty items rule...I could go on and on...the only things I've bought there that I (or my cats) didn't like were the TJs brand of soy "meat" products (chix nuggets, etc) and my cats didn't like their canned tuna for kitties. Other than those things, everything is fantastic and their prices are way fair!!!! YAY TJs!
