Funny, it's all over the place here, oddly I've never tried one. I see it mostly as a drink or soda, been tempted but since I've never had a formal introduction to it I've hesitated. So it's a sweet fruit, huh, comes in such an odd form? But my curiousity is a bit more peeked, will I try it?

never had the fruit itself though [Edited 3/20/08 13:05pm] YOU NEED TO EAT THE FRUIT! it has a taste unlike any other fruit i've enjoyed... this.fruit.is.the.ISSSSHHH. try it. seriously. no, seriously. In Panama we call it tamarindo and I love it. Since you're West Indian, have you ever had genips (sp?)? They are a little green fruit that grow in clumps on trees. I love these too. The last time I had them I was in Jamaica on a bus tour and we pulled over to the side of the road and picked them off of a tree. I ate them in Panama growing up but I've never seen them in the US.

I made a dish called son-in-law eggs with tamarind extract
Ingredients for Spice Mixture : 8 eggs> 2 tablespoon oil 2 tablespoons soft brown sugar or palm sugaror 1 tablespooon fish sauce 2 tablespoons tamarind puree 1 teaspoon chopped red chillies optional 1/2 cup fresh coriander leaves chopped Place the eggs in a pan of cold water.Bring the water boil and cook the eggs for 7 minutes.Drain and run under cold water until cool Remove the shell Heat the oil in a work or frying pan Add the eggs to the work in batches and turn frequently over medium heat. When they are golden brown and blistered, remove the eggs from the work and keep warm. Remove excess oil from pan; add brown sugar, fish sauce, tamarind and chillies.Bring to boil;boil rapidly for 2 minutes or until mixture resembles a syrup.Serve eggs with syrup poured over, sprinkled with coriander leaves

Yep, we have those here, usually as an ingredient in curries and other dishes, but occasionally just to be eaten as is.
Still can't beat sour, unripe mango dipped in a sugar, salt & chilli mix though.

sammij said: Since i was a little girl, my padre would always buy me treats from the west indian store (sold crazy unique foods from the west indies, and being jamaican, you bet your sweet ass we still shop there to this day)
and he'd always bring me either coconut drops OR... TAMARIND this delightfully tasty little treat is soooo delicious, i loved cracking the shells open and just devouring the fruit inside: and sometimes, as an extra perk, he'd buy me the tamarind in ball form (omitted the term "tamarind balls" from the subject line for imago sake, of course) they would take the fruit, mix it with some chili and sugar and voilà!: i've been munching on these all day since i've been home... and its just a nice reminder of my childhood...and they're so tasty! a whole lot of sweetness with a bit of tart, and a bunch of spice! who else loves tamarind?!?! r those kind of like salty chocolate balls?

sammij said: INSATIABLE said: I usually eat my tamarind as a paste. I use it in the place of peanut butter a lot of the time. It's great on toast. Tamarind and Nutella mixed together is a guilty pleasure.
It comes in little bright tubes that you can squeeze like a Push-Pop. I eat it more often when I'm sick for some reason. i was SO unaware of the actual paste! i was given a block of tamarind paste before but it was solid, you sliced it and ate it that way, THIS.... this is different i want this... i wonder if i can get it in canada... Mexican's gobble this shit up like it's chocolate or summin. And seeing as how I live in Southern' California...well....it's EVERYWHERE! Sadly I've never tried it> I have Tamarindo, which is a drink made out of the stuff. It's pretty tasty. "El Gallo Giro" serves a fresh homemade version of it.....iiiiDELICIOSO!!!! U find it in a lot of mexican restaurants and most is like a premix like minutemaid lemonade at coco's or summin. But like Hot Dog On a stick had FRESH lemnade, El Gallo Giro ans a fresh Tamarindo drink. I hope this all makes sense, cuz I'm
