They are both smart but in different ways. Apples to oranges I think.

I am a dog person so my first answer would have been dogs but I have also owned some pretty smart cats.

In my experience dogs are smarter... what do you think?

But I like cat's behaviors better (litter box training, leaving people the hell alone, and being cautious of things).

My dog lets me tell him what to do.

My cats all look at me like "fuck you" if I so much as tell them to get off a counter. Pretty damn smart.

No really, I think it all balances out; each one has their areas they're smarter in than the other. Like people. Only not...

My little puppy--not quite a year old can recognize images on the TV. I've never had a pet who does that, but he seems starts barking when he sees other animals! I looked it up, and apparently dogs who can do that are very intelligent??? Now all of my many dogs over my lifetime have been very easily trained, but this little guy is very unique.

As far as cats, our one remaining cat is very bright and curious.. always wanting to play and "socialize" with the dogs and us.

Then again, the criteria for "intelligence" I'm using is obviously biased.

But I'm telling ya'll Doc, our newest Chiquaqua/Dachschund mix is very, very bright.... It's scary.

from my understanding, i know that cats are. because, they do not know what you command them to. cats, know how to manipulate people(which we love). cats, are also very human like. dogs, are smart, but more loyal than cats. i don't know, i'm a cat person myself. but in the case of smart animals...pigs are really intelligent.

Perhaps the question is better phrased and more provocative if asked if the keepers of cats are smarter, or those that keep dogs.

After all cat people consider it smart for an animal to shit in their house.
