Okay, here's the poop on flaxseed.

You should buy it whole because the oils in it are very delicate and go rancid quickly. Chances are, the ground flaxseed you see on the shelf at the store has already gone off. It won't hurt you...but it won't help you, either.

If you use it in a beverage (or sprinkle it in yogurt or anything liquidy), plan on consuming it immediately. Flaxseed has a lot of soluble fiber and turns slimy very quickly. Don't make a protein shake with flaxseed and put it in the refrigerator for breakfast in the morning - it'll turn to sludge and you'll never get it down.

Some people bake with it...but heating flaxseed damages the fats in it.

Flaxseed oil is not the best. Again, you can have rancidity issues. Flaxseed oil should always be refrigerated and never be heated. (In other words, it is not to be used as cooking oil.) You have to use it fast - it goes off very quickly.

There is a brand that has it ground for you already and it's so much easier. I put a table spoon in my orange juice.

But if you cook w/ it (as a cooking oil) you fuck it up anyway, right? I'm still fuzzy on the cooking thing (how the heat takes away all the good stuff) & how it's supposed to retain the goodness through cooking shrug

It is, and it actually tastes pretty good. But now reading the other stuff on here, who knows how long it's good for? I guess your best bet is just hammering the seeds everyday to get the maximum benefits.

That IS a cute new avvy Rhonda biggrin

My solution was to break down & get a tiny coffee grinder - I'm gonna grind & store the seeds small batches at a time. I think I'll start by throwing some in my baba ganoush drool

You're welcome. And a coffee grinder is really the best thing to use to grind it. (Just get an "el cheapo" Braun or something - you don't need an expensive grinder for this.) Just make sure you pulse the grinder so the seeds don't get too hot as you're grinding them.

I take one Flax seed oil capsule with each meal.

I've heard on nutrition podcasts that it is better than the Omega 3. I can't tell any difference between the two.
