Okay, here's the poop on flaxseed.
You should buy it whole because the oils in it are very delicate and go rancid quickly. Chances are, the ground flaxseed you see on the shelf at the store has already gone off. It won't hurt you...but it won't help you, either. If you use it in a beverage (or sprinkle it in yogurt or anything liquidy), plan on consuming it immediately. Flaxseed has a lot of soluble fiber and turns slimy very quickly. Don't make a protein shake with flaxseed and put it in the refrigerator for breakfast in the morning - it'll turn to sludge and you'll never get it down. Some people bake with it...but heating flaxseed damages the fats in it. Flaxseed oil is not the best. Again, you can have rancidity issues. Flaxseed oil should always be refrigerated and never be heated. (In other words, it is not to be used as cooking oil.) You have to use it fast - it goes off very quickly. Then I read whole isn't really the way to go b/c you won't fully digest them all, grinding them is better. But my little mortar & pestle is tragic & annoying just trying to do a teaspoon full I don't think I wanna buy a coffee grinder just for this shit I don't wanna buy meal, it freaks me out. I guess I can give the oil a shot, but out of all 3 options this one goes bad most quickly. Anyone taking it on a regular basis? How do you use it? There is a brand that has it ground for you already and it's so much easier. I put a table spoon in my orange juice.

I'm still fuzzy on the cooking thing (how the heat takes away all the good stuff) & how it's supposed to retain the goodness through cooking

WOW, they must grind it superfine! It is, and it actually tastes pretty good. But now reading the other stuff on here, who knows how long it's good for? I guess your best bet is just hammering the seeds everyday to get the maximum benefits.

Omg how cute are you in your new avatar??!!!!! Like, ohhh my god! That IS a cute new avvy Rhonda My solution was to break down & get a tiny coffee grinder - I'm gonna grind & store the seeds small batches at a time. I think I'll start by throwing some in my baba ganoush

I'm definitely gonna start uppin' my Omega3 intake.

You're welcome. And a coffee grinder is really the best thing to use to grind it. (Just get an "el cheapo" Braun or something - you don't need an expensive grinder for this.) Just make sure you pulse the grinder so the seeds don't get too hot as you're grinding them. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

I take one Flax seed oil capsule with each meal.
I've heard on nutrition podcasts that it is better than the Omega 3. I can't tell any difference between the two. "The first time I saw the cover of Dirty Mind in the early 80s I thought, 'Is this some drag queen ripping on Freddie Prinze?'" - Some guy on The Gear Page
