FLAX SEED??

hmmm

Who takes it? & in what form?

I bought a small bag tonight, figured I'd throw it into a protein shake or my eggs or something. smile Then I read whole isn't really the way to go b/c you won't fully digest them all, grinding them is better. neutral But my little mortar & pestle is tragic & annoying just trying to do a teaspoon full mad I don't think I wanna buy a coffee grinder just for this shit mad mad

I don't wanna buy meal, it freaks me out. boxed I guess I can give the oil a shot, but out of all 3 options this one goes bad most quickly. shrug

Anyone taking it on a regular basis? How do you use it? Any thoughts/suggestions are appreciated bananadance

What kind of stuff do you put it in? I tasted the seeds & they're pretty tasteless, slightly nutty flavor so I imagine they could go in just about anything without being distracting...

Is it expensive in oil form?

I had some once, used some in my muesli whole, then I think I tipped it out on the lawn for the birds. I didn't like them so much. I eat bread with them in it. Whole is probably only so good for fibre.

from wikipedia:

Nutritional supplement

Fresh, refrigerated and unprocessed, linseed oil is used as a nutritional supplement. It contains high levels of omega-3 fatty acids, especially alpha-linolenic acid, which has been suggested to be beneficial for preventing heart disease and arrhythmia,[1] reducing inflammation leading to atherosclerosis,[2] and is required for normal infant development.[3] However recent well-controlled placebo studies suggest that regular consumption of flax seed oil may not reduce the risk of stroke, heart disease, or cancer any greater than placebo.[4] Regular flaxseed oil contains between 52 and 63 % alpha linolenic acid (C18:3 n-3). Plant breeders have developed flaxseed with high alpha linolenic acid content (70 %) and very low alpha linoleic acid content (< 3%).[5]

Although flax seeds themselves contain lignans, a class of phytoestrogens considered to have antioxidant and cancer preventing properties,[6][7][8] the extracted linseed oil does not contain the lignans found in flax seed,[6] and therefore does not have the same antioxidant properties. In fact, flax seed oil is easily oxidized, and rapidly becomes rancid with an unpleasant odour unless stored in the refrigerator. Even when kept under cool conditions it has a shelf life of only a few weeks.[9][10] Oil with an unpleasant or rancid odour should be discarded. Rancid oils contribute to the formation of free radicals and may be carcinogenic.[11][12][13] Oxidation of flax seed oil is major commercial concern, and antioxidants may be added to prevent rancidification.[14]

I'll have to look for breads that have it - I don't like little seedy things in my bread but I'm sure some have it ground in so it's not apparent.

But I gotta make it through this bag of seeds confused Glad I bought a small bag neutral

The oil would be so easy, but I want the antioxidants mad I guess I gotta stick w/ the seeds... & price a mini coffee grinder rolleyes At least the seeds stay good for longer so when I start being flaky & forgetting to take them I can go back to them without worry or having to buy new...

When I used to use flax seed I would buy it whole and then I found a small cheap coffee grinder and I would grind up a whole bunch. I would keep it in the fridge and sprinkle on cereal, toast, into protein shakes.....

You can buy it already ground, and a good health food store will grind it for you.

I bought a pre-ground bag at Meijer. It was by their vitamins and stuff.

I put it on regular things like yogurt, oatmeal and cereal, but also add it tolots of other stuff...bread and muffin mixes, pancakes, even sauces and stews. Once ground, you can't really see it in stuff unless it is light colored, like pancake mix. You can't see in spaghetti sauce! wink Great way for my husband to eat healthy stuff and not know it!

Kept in the freezer, it will last longer past the expiration date.

Fish Oil is better. Basically, flax seed oil is of no use to your body in it's current form. It becomes of use when it is converted to EPA and DHA. Now the problem is sometimes our body doesn't convert flax seed oil properly and alot of it is wasted. In Fish Oil, there is no need to convert to the fish oil to EPH and DHA because it already exists in Fish Oil. No conversion needed. If you are using flaxseed for the taste, then go wild with it. But for health reasons, fish oil is better.

Because I'm mostly RAW/vegan, I actually use it in my 'raw breads'

Basically I combine a cup of ground flax seed, ground sunflower seeds, onions, olive oil and soy suace and dehydrate it (it's very delicious).

But the best flax seed is from the oil. Cause it takes ALOT of flax seeds to obtain the health benefits attributed to it. The oil pretty much does that for you in one concentrated gel cap.

SAUCES, great idea! nod Having them grind it @ the health food store freaks me out boxed lol I think I'll do the small grinder or buy it pre-ground. The cool thing about the seeds is that my local drugstore carries items by The Food Mill, a popular natural food store in the area. So I can get the seeds there w/o trekking around... But they may sell the ground kind in more places than I'm thinking hmmm

Also unless you're vegan or vegitarian, the omega-3/combo fish oils are more affective than flax seed oil, which is coverted in to omega-3 pre-cursers (I think) before then being converted to omega 3

I take an Omega3 vitamin when I remember to giggle I'm using it not only for the antioxidant benefits but for the muscle building/fat burning benefits as well since I'm working out again smile
