I think that the serendipedous effect you allude to is observed because of your more positve perspective on current circumstances.
I too said that 2008 was gonna be a better year. So far I believe it is. Alternatively God saw our sad souls crying for a decent year on the back of two pretty terrible ones and decided "THEY ARE DECENT CHAPS WHO DESERVE A BREAK" and thus, it came to pass.
