does pornography exploit women?

If a person is a willing party can it still be called exploitation? Pornography as eveything else is made to make money. The people that pose in the magazines or star in the movies are as well doing it for the money. Does this fact alone wipe away the exploitation label? It's not that simple for many people. How do you feel? I would like to hear all opinions.

yeah I guess. But if you ever watch porn--I'm not talking gay, but just plain old straight porn, it's all about the penis. More camera time is focused on the penis than anything else.

I say if you really want to see exploitation of women that harms them, causes them to drain their finances, and destroys their sense of self, look to the fashion industry. That's porn that even all the biblethumbers expose to their children at dangerously young ages. nod

I fucking love porn.

What doesn't exploit women?

I am a fan of porn and I think it exploits women. Some of it gives men unrealistic expectations, plays into sadistic fantasies of sleeping with teens, rape, violence and most of the time, the women who do it are high and are not into it. I like to tell myself that some of the women are freaks who do dig it, but not being able to tell kills the fantasy for me lately. I know one day soon I am going to stop watching it.

I like all that stuff so there has to be some women who do it because they like it too.

I dunno, like you said...if the woman is not into it and is just doing it for crack cash that's certainly exploitive.

Too bad it wasn't just people who love doing what they do...but I can't see myself boycotting it in protest because that is not always the case.

I do not think that porn - the act of having sex on film for others to enjoy - cheapens sex at all.

I'm into some pretty racy things personally but watching it on film when I can tell a chick doesn't truly like to be treated that way is a turn off.

Yes, same here. If it's obvious that she's hating it or really upset...I'll turn it off.

I say no. People make a choice to be in it and are compensated. And why don't we ever worry about men being exploited by porn? Men get paid a lot less than women in straight porn, and gay-for-pay straight men are doing something that they're theoretically not into at all.

In my opinion, men are not exploited in straight porn. It's all pleasure for them. They are the ones inflicting pain/discomfort, getting but not giving. It's a win/win situation for them.

Some gay porn is a total different story.

There are so many professions where you could say people are exploited.

Are the men being exploited in porn as well?

Oops, someone already asked.

I don't understand how you can say that it's all pleasure for the man but not for the woman...?

You seem to be talking about a very small market in porn - and even then, I know some women totally get off on being treated that way just as much as any man. Plus there is the whole fem-dom scene.

I may need to change my brand of porn but I know when a woman is faking being excited and faking orgasm. If a guy has to spit on a woman to make her wet, I just turn the movie off. Someone said porn is not geared towards women and they are right. Most fo the films I've watched objectify the woman. I used to have no problem with it because the woman was cool with being used in that way but now, since I can't escape into the fantasy, it's becoming pointless.

I tend to find almost all professional porn a turnoff. Porn stars are not very sexy, imo. But I can't feel sorry for them when they're making a lot of money doing something that I don't have any moral qualms with. It's a sleazy industry, sure, and fat cats at the top make more money than their stars, but it's a clearcut deal: "Do this and I'll pay you $X." I don't lose any sleep over the employees at Wal-Mart, so I can't really worry about porn people.

seriously, just try looking around for amateur stuff. it's hit or miss a lot of the time, but i much prefer it to how plastic professional straight porn is.

Porn is as old as dirt, and one of the biggest industries out there, so we're all(regardless of gender)buying and watching. Hell the net is pretty much just Porntube.

It's not exactly empowering, but to call it that is going too far. Compare the lifestyles of these women and men with some poor young man or woman in a foreign country who's parents sell them into sex slavery or prostitute them or who just get kidnapped. NOT EVEN CLOSE.

But pretty much everyone who's involved in porn, male and female, has a history of abuse. There are no well-adjusted people who do porn.

There are exceptions, those people who've almost been forced into it by whatever situation they're in...but that isn't true for the majority

While I agree that there are a lot of people who willingly get into porn and even get their kicks out of being porn superstars, you're right in that just about all professional porn stars have some type of horrible back story involving abuse, neglect, addiction, or molestation. It's finding out about this stuff that turned me from an excited fan to an ambivalent viewer of porn. It's hard to enjoy the fantasy of those sex scenes when you know that the performers are basically psychologically damaged in some form.

The other sightly more disturbing development in porn is the creation of gonzo movies, or what should really be called "jack crack". It used to be that there would be at least an attempt to create a plotline in a porn movie, however flimsy it was, but now there are massive subgenres of pornos that go straight into the sex act and dispense with any plot whatsoever. Now you get videos like "Anal Assassins", "Big Black Booties", or "Cum Sucking Sluts" that are made just for primarily male viewers to use as a sexual aid. That's not to say that some of these aren't hot; some of them are especially hot drooling ; but it gives people a highly distorted and cheap view of sexuality that even sexually healthy and highly horny people can't live up to.
