Although when he said that, he was almost 37, so perhaps he should being saying that 40 is the new 30. razz

That said, I liked his line about being young enough to know what car to buy, but old enough to know not to put rims on it.

Thanks for the birthday wishes, everyone. smile

I just realized... I first became a PPML/prince.org member at age 17. That means I've spent nearly half of my life on this site. shocked

Perhaps we need an addiction warning label on the main page. wink

My dad emailed me this morning and, in addition to the usual birthday greetings, mentioned something I hadn't realized before:

In one sense, I'm an hour younger than I used to be.

How? Thanks to the federal government and their repeated tinkering with Daylight Saving Time.

Back in 1978, DST didn't begin until April. But effective last year, DST now starts on the second Sunday of March.

Thus, while my birth certificate states that I was born at 1:30 p.m. (Boston time), I didn't hit the 30-year-mark until the clocks read 2:30 p.m. in Boston today.

Of course, this is all academic. My "real" time of birth didn't change; it's the clock that changed. And if we're going by what the clocks say, I've already cut another three hours off of my life by moving to the Pacific Time Zone.

But consider the following hypothetical. (We legal types love hypotheticals.)

Jane Doe is born on December 31, 1978, at 11:30 p.m. But due to the DST change, she now doesn't really become another year older until January 1st at 12:30 a.m. So what happens if she petitions a court to have an amended birth certificate issued with a new birth date -- and year -- of January 1, 1979?

You be the judge. smile

Well, I screwed that one up. doh! I was trying to make things a little more interesting by raising the possibility of someone trying to change their birth year. Problem is, the DST changes wouldn't affect someone born in December 1978, because there hasn't been DST in December since World War II.

Still, you see the issue: at a minimum, someone could argue that their legal date of birth should be changed due to a DST change.

After a long day, with much reflection and many conversations with friends and family, I've concluded that 30 is not the new 20. And that's a good thing, because at this point, I want to be 30, not 20.

One family member told me that her 30s were a great decade, but her 40s were even better, and she's been enjoying her 50s quite a bit. We'll see how that goes. smile

Sorry, but today's society is a modern-day Logan's Run. If you're age 30+, you're consider "old".

Goddamn! You are that Matt. The law student. Didn't you change your handle to MattUk or something? Funny, you were always the young guy compared to Kevin and Ben. The student with a lot of time on his hands. Now I find out you are about my age, and I've spent half my life as well on this site! lurking

are you kidding? I DEFINITELY think so. i've often heard tell that 40 is when you start to hit your true "stride"...i've noticed how even in commercial media, i'm far more intrigued by the 35+ crowd than those younger...i find them considerably more faceted and dimensional. in fact, i'm looking forward to it myself. ithink this is when we can possibly reach the state of being our most authentic selves nod
