As we get older, we sometimes have the benefit (or calamity) of observing irony in life.

The lamentable downfall of NY Gov. Elliot Spitzer was ironic on two fronts: he'd attacked prostitution as disgusting, and his transactions to his brothel of choice were caught through financial monitoring that he helped enact. (I believe the expression that applies to his situation is "he was hoisted by his own petard.")

But, sometimes, irony can be hilarious.

Case in point: A number of years ago, the woman I was dating was outraged that I'd dated a white woman. She said that it was an ethnic and cultural betrayal, and that her mother even warned her about black men who date white women.

Fast forward to the present. Our paths crossed recently -- said ex is now engaged to a white man. I'm quite happy for her, but it still causes me a chuckle.

What ironies have you known or observed?

a girl i knew slowly and cruelly took advantage of a friend of mine for years, but after he finally woke up and cut her out of his life, she moved on to a new guy who gave her VD, stole money from her, and then dumped her. it was a beautiful thing.

Well you see, it was what she was raised into believing. One cannot fault the child who grows up with narrow-minded parents or families. One cannot fault what society has taught us. One can only be faulted for not recognizing the failure of racist ideas and not making efforts to change within themselves once they've seen the errors of their parent's or family's ways.
