Nuts and cheese are whole, natural foods that contain good fats.

Dried fruit is nothing but sugar. You might as well eat the bread you gave up.

If you want fruit, berries (fresh - not dried) are the least carb-intensive and have the highest fiber.

I dunno where you buy your dried fruit, but over here in sexy England there's virtually no sugar, unless you choose to buy the sugar-filled version. confuse

Also sugar does not equal carbohydrates, there's also a massive difference in the quantity consumed. I wouldn't eat dried fruits like I did bread. That would be quite ridiculous.

Cheese contains good fats, but in massive amounts - so not really good for, say, a 9pm snack. lol

I might just stick to grapes.

What do you mean...sugar doesn't equal carbohydrates? Sugar is the purest form of carbohydrate. confuse

And dried fruit is very high in sugar - even without any added. Why? Because you've removed most of the water. Which does what? Concentrates what's left - ie, sugar. Look at the carb content of raisins sometime.

Cheese is a great 9 pm snack...precisely because it contains fat. If you eat something sugary (like dried fruit), your blood sugar will be up and down all night. That may affect your sleep...and certainly will affect your body's production of human growth hormone. Your body typically makes most of this in your first period of state IV sleep. But it won't make HGH in the presence of insulin - which is released to metabolize what? The carbohydrate you ate before you went to bed.

Wonderwall

I am currently trying to drop some pounds after FINALLY quitting smoking. Veggies as snacks are the best for me. Carrots, celery, broccoli...nutritious, satisfying, and digests well. I do eat fruit too, but not too much...I tend to get the squirts (sorry) bad if I eat too much fruit. I also eat nuts, low fat cheese, yogurt, and sun chips. I have cut out ALL fast food and sweets. High protein, high fiber, and low to moderate carbs. So far I have lost 15 lbs in 3 weeks. Started exercising too so things are def moving forward.

With THAT said, once a week I indulge myself on ONE thing that may not be that healthy, but tastes GOOD, as a reward. I don't go crazy or anything (STILL stay away from fast food), but will have some baked ziti, a burger, a few buffalo wings, or some pizza. I don't ever want to live without enjoying my fave foods every once in awhile. That just ain't no fun.

Hey I mentioned dried fruit. mad

You have to remember that some nuts are really high in good fats and have beneficial oils in them. Cheese on the other hand..well... it is just yummie..therefore it must be bad.

Almost all of what they do to milk these days damages it. Pasteurization...homogenization. But the worst thing of all is the way they strip fat out of milk. Milk has fat naturally. Taking it away makes the milk less nutritious in a number of ways...

From realmilk.com

Average butterfat content from old-fashioned cows at the turn of the century was over 4% (or more than 50% of calories). Today butterfat comprises less than 3% (or less than 35% of calories). Worse, consumers have been duped into believing that low-fat and skim milk products are good for them. Only by marketing low-fat and skim milk as a health food can the modern dairy industry get rid of its excess poor-quality, low-fat milk from modern high-production herds. Butterfat contains vitamins A and D needed for assimilation of calcium and protein in the water fraction of the milk. Without them protein and calcium are more difficult to utilize and possibly toxic. Butterfat is rich in short- and medium chain fatty acids which protect against disease and stimulate the immune system. It contains glyco-spingolipids which prevent intestinal distress and conjugated linoleic acid which has strong anticancer properties.

Low-fat cheese comes from low-fat milk. In a word - yuck.

For me the general rule is if it's natural (ie not very processed) and not animal it can hardly be bad for you. So yeah nuts & avocados are fatty, but it's the right kind. Fruit is full of sugar, but it's not white sugar.

The goods of those foods outweigh any bad IMO. You could argue otherwise, but since most people don't eat enough fruit, veggies, & nuts, lets argue the finer points after we all do. smile

I like to slice up some carrots, celery, & cucumber and keep bags in the fridge, so they're the easiest snack around. Part of eating is just grabbing the quickest thing, right?

I was just thinking that... that's what I was going to end up having to do for snacks. I was going to try the V8 Splash drinks until the furctose in it was pointed out to me and I had that flavored water crap.

they said on Oprah this past week that all drinking a bunch of water does is makes you piss a lot.
They did a comparison with a set of twins, one was allowed to drink water and the other not for a month. They took samples of their blood and urine and said the was no difference. They said you get all the water you need mostly from food.

I'd have to disagree with those findings and not just because it was on "Oprah". Drinking a regular amount of water does in fact help your body function properly and better. Taking blood and urine samples may show no difference but doing test on the organs in the body that may have been affected by the lack of water is were the real results of this test truly lies, I think.

Nuts have good fats though, so they're okay. Cheese - not so much lol

Yep. nod Nuts are really healthy as long as they are raw and not roasted with salt added and all that extra crap. I pretty much live on raw almonds and walnuts. drool In fact, whenever I need to get down to "performing weight", I load up on nuts even more than I normally would. You only need a handful to give you lots of energy and I always end up losing weight as well.

Well, those and this always helps me get through the day...
