I Get It Now! Why You Can't Reform a Band/Friendship Related

So tonight was VERY interesting, as part of my own history. I thought I would share it with any orgers who care to know why.

I was in a band for a few years and it was a big part of my life. I spent about an hour this evening, seeing one of my former band-mates. We had sent MySpace messages back and forth, about working on some new music. (I guess we both were kind of feeling nostalgic for 5 years ago.) We agreed to meet in a local coffee shop, and talk about music.

When we sat down, and starting talking, there was a moment where it felt like 2003 all over again. However, the more we talked that faded and the present reality was like a cold breeze on a warm summer night. It became clear - how much we had both changed as people. Sure, we could both laugh about the past. However, we both had different aspirations with music and life.

We ended the conversation..not with writing lyrics or much of anything. We just kind of agreed to keep in touch.

I'll never forget...I walked into that coffee shop with all this excitement about hopefully making some new music, with an important person from my past. I left there, knowing it probably wouldn't happen, knowing more clearly what I wanted, and glad that I got to reconnect with someone from my past.

It is sad when friendships change or fall apart all together. I never understood it when people would say, "People change, and people grow." The saying, "People grow apart" never really sank in with me. And when it did, it had all these negative emotions attached to it.

Tonight I realized we had both grown apart and it was perfectly fine. Acceptance is bliss.

I can relate to that

Shifts in several of my relationships have left me feeling exactly the same

It's really great that you're at such peace with this adjustment. There have been times in my life (and I'm sure I'm not the only one) where growing apart from someone was more difficult than it should have been.

An outlook like yours tonight with your friend is one we could all use at many points in our lives.

These things don't last forever, and dwelling on that reality won't change it. Thank you for sharing.
Oh shit, my hat done fell off
