Police Respond to Miami High School Melee



More than a dozen students were taken away in handcuffs by police following a disturbance at Edison Senior High School, Feb.29.

Police responded in force Friday at a high school where a protest became unruly, and more than a dozen students were hauled away in handcuffs.

The disturbance at Miami Edison Senior High School occurred during a protest over the arrest Thursday of another student, a Miami-Dade County schools police spokesman said.

"That protest became very unruly," Charles Hurley, a schools police commander, told WSVN-TV. He said some students threw water bottles, books and other items at police officers.

Dozens of police cars responded to the school north of downtown Miami.

Fire rescue officials said one student and three police officers had minor injuries. School officials said classes returned to normal shortly after police responded.

Miami Edison recently celebrated its move from a designation of an "F" or failing to "D" based on Florida's ranking of public schools. Last year only 10 percent of students met reading standards. Less than a third met state math standards.

Great school Let's hear it for the American educational system.

Some high schools are so large in size that it becomes very difficult to enforce discipline.
I don't know how big this Miami High School is, but it's sad what happened friday.

It's because of all the sunny weather.
Up here in Chicago, it's been cold & snowy all winter long & you don't see our young'n's engaging in melees, unrulinesses and such.

They are planning a protest monday. Supposedly a BOYCOTT (like they need another excuse to be skipping school) is planned. They have a list of DEMANDS? such as amnesty for the 27 arrested, firing of the school principle, and an apology from administrators and LEO's. This is gonna be fun

I thinks its a good thing that they are kind of politically motivativated. At this point a good community organizer should step in, help the students work out a sensible, realistic, non-violent game plan. They should flip this to a positive and get themost from all of this media attention.

This sets a bad precedence when only 10 percent of students have met reading standards. Less than a third met state math standards.

Their district has to be more involved in its community. And, it needs to provide more social services to reach to his it population. Otherwise, if it does not not address the ethnic , socio-economic, and socio- psychological needs of the community, its lost and no academic achievement progress can take place.

These are parents with 6th grade eduactions. Their kids can barely read and after seeing some of their written victim statements.....I have little hope for their futures
