I have a ton of movies to catch up on before March.

i should have a marathon of all nominated films.

I have not seen one of the movies nominated for anything and nor do I really want to besides maybe Juno and No Country (which interestingly both have Minnesota roots).

for Cate Blanchett.....again a double nod!

I can see nominating actors, actresses, etc. from movies that tanked at the box office.
But to not nominate any of the top-grossing movies for Best Picture? Weird.

I'm SO tired of Cate Blanchett being nominated for whatever crap she does...she bores me to tears as an actress.
On the other hand, SO glad to see Sarah Polley got a screenwriting nomination for Away From Her. [Edited 1/22/08 7:06am]

I think she's decent, but tremendously overrated, particularly by the Academy. When I watch her, I can see the wheels turning inside her head when she acts, and I have never seen her disappear into a role. JMHO. [Edited 1/22/08 7:22am]

We'll have to agree to disagree I have a similar problem with the Academy's obsession with Judi Dench. She does the same role (imperious British matron) over and over again, and she does it well, but that's it. I'm glad Cate chooses different roles, but still I always feel I'm looking at Cate up on the screen and not the character. [Edited 1/22/08 7:24am]

Hey, just because I used to have a yellow Camaro very similar to the one in Transformers doesn't mean that...well, OK - it does. LOL.

I just saw No Country for Old Men last night: it was fantastic. All of the performances.. the story, the cinematograhy were outstanding. My new movie star crush (outside of Johnny Depp who rarely goes wrong) is Javier Bardem. I hope he wins best supporting actor because his performance was just plain mesmorizing in a spooky sort of way. As much of a fan of Sweeney Todd as I was, I'm not surprised it wasn't nominated for best movie. It was just a step below something like No Country. I'm glad Johnny was nominated though, but I think he's going to have some tough competition with Daniel Day-Lewis in particular. Tommy Lee Jones was even nominated for best actor but not for No Country... The biggest shock for me was that The Diving Bell and the Butterfly wasn't even nominated for best foreign film in spite of the director being nominated?? Anyway, I'm hoping it will be televised because I'm interested in the race this year. Then again, I support the writers', too.

[Edited 1/22/08 7:24am] Funny that you mention Judi Dench, I am with you when it comes to her. But when it comes to Blanchett: 'Elizabeth' 1998 'The Aviator' (won) 2004 'Notes On A Scandal' 2006 'Elizabeth: The Golden Age' 2007 'I'm Not There' 2007 Only two times the same role of an imperious British matron, which is obvious because it is the same character she plays, but with an interval of almost 10 years. Her other roles for which she was nominated are very diverse!

She scores more points with me than Judi, though, for the diversity of her choices.

I know, Dench won her Oscar for her role as Elizabeth in 'Shakspeare in Love'.....I just wanted to state that, besides both having played Elizabeth, these are two very different actresses.....personally, I can not watch Judi Dench....no matter what role she plays...
