I guess this all makes me the biggest sucker then, going along with all the obligations re Mon's parents. I've heard and read online ex-pats saying they're not giving anything... not having the customs... no gold, money or nuffin' and they get all stubborn and uppity about it and I have to laugh. Would Mon love me if I hadn't done it? Of course, but it'd fuck up the day, make the family look bad, and upset my in-laws no end. If you're just cool about everything it's easy to see how it's beautiful and fun to follow those traditions. I'm sure a western wedding is similar and the ring is to many an essential part of it. Skimping on it might not make a difference but why not give a ring and follow tradition? Sometimes that kind of formal gesture is what separates an occasion from other moments in our everyday lives. It's more, and so it stands out.
