Sounds crazy, I know, but it happens. You make it sound like all straight people are these neurotic, insecurity-ridden scatterbrains constantly completely ill at ease in the dating and relationship world. Notice how there had to be a PROGRESSION to the sex part? Notice that you didn't say that men and women can hook up for the sake of sex without all this societal baggage connected to their whoredom if they do? Does anybody ever think about the fact that sex can lead to PREGNANCY, even if precautions are taken? The stakes of having sex are higher for women. It is the woman who must go through pregnancy, abortion, hormonal birth control, whatever. Not the man, so perhaps she is a LITTLE more cautious? Why does nobody ever talk about this?

It is not society ... it is morals and respect that encourage some straight ppl into that "natural" progression that is called a relationship. Your generalisations and stereotypes are amusing some times.

I'm sure the whole idea was started by men, like a brand, perhaps to protect a woman in his absence (like a quiet threat), but mostly just to take her off the market. When I travelled alone in the Middle East, I wore my grandma's diamond ring. It was a key tool in avoiding relentless harrassment. Men look for it, or when you show it to them, they immediately back off. It actually gave me a lot of freedom!

Every single time a woman has sex, no matter how "safe" they play it, nothing is 100% effective in preventing pregnancy. We have to think about it every single time. EVERY SINGLE TIME. And until about, oh, 70-100 years ago or so childbirth was essentially the leading cause of death for women. More women died in shildbirth than from anything else. |

More women died in shildbirth than from anything else. That is such an excellent point. THANK YOU LADIES! I'm glad to hear I'm not alone with these worries, because they are very real. Not to mention that historically, women were severely punished for getting pregnant out of wedlock whereas the men could remain invisible. Even in such a contemporary, hip movie as Juno, Juno has to bear the humiliation of going to high school pregnant, as her boyfriend watches from the sidelines. Women have to carry the physical burden and the societal burden far more than men do. So yeah, sometimes we need to feel we can trust a man before jumping into bed with him. Commitment and responsibility are important, because we can use the support if something goes wrong.
