I absolutely loved the 80's (still do). I have a lot of good memories from that decade: bar hopping with friends, going out on dates every weekend, just having the time of my life. The movies and videos were so campy and/or corny back then, but they were cool. Every time I hear and 80's song on the radio, or see an 80's video or movie on TV, I start feeling nostalgic. The 80's was a great decade that never should have ended (but did).

I was in high school from 82-85, undergrad college from 85-89.
Those last four were the best years of my life!

When I look at pictures of 80s fashions and hairstyles, I can't believe I used to wear some of that stuff and thought I was STYLIN'!

I took my high school yearbook to school to show my students, and they thought our clothes & hair were so funny. But then I stand in the doorway of my classroom and see wide belts around sweaters, legwarmers, big hair, and a few other things pass by. When I point out that we wore similar things backinthaday, they . They thought they were original!!
I'm seeing a lot of mohawks, too.

What I really miss from the 80's were the block parties.

When we would just bock off the street from traffic with huge dumpsters on either side... the neighborhood DJ would bring out his huge speakers and turn tables,
we pull out slabs of linoleum and some would breakdance, while others just jammed on....when things began to wind down a few Latino older men would play their instruments (conga drums, horn, and that scratchy thing with the afro pic) they would harmonize and sing until the sun came up... it was the absolute best partying I ever did, the entire neighborhood partied.

I remember my first sleepover at Natasha's house. Karen was there too, we watched movies in our nighties and Natasha showed us how she looked exactly like Olivia Newton John if she wore her mum's sunglasses on top of her head. I played with their merlin and simon says games, and was really jealous they had a Yamaha organ with the bossanova beat

I had a pair of pastel pink Lee jeans, super tight, and they matched my coral necklace that my friend Samantha brought me from Fiji. She was adopted, and so were her 2 brothers. She went to Thailand on student exchange, but when she got there her host family had changed their minds and she had to go live on a crocodile farm!

I had a friend called Yvonne and we rode our bikes to school together, on the cold mornings we wore legwarmers. She loved Mel Gibson and Rick Springfield. I loved Prince. I made her listen to Prince a lot, until her mum complained to my mum and my mum made me swear never to play Lets Pretend We're Married to any more of my friends.

My mum used to dress like Joan Armatrading, and she had the Eye in the Sky album (Alan Parsons Project) and I spent every weekend at the beach, doing my homework in the car, while my parents WindSurfed.

Definitely the music. Discovering alternative rock bands like REM, the Smiths, the Cure, and the Talking Heads when they were brand new and only a certain privileged populace seemed privy to them. Getting stoned and listening to the Smiths is one of my favorite memories. Listening to New Order with only a strobe light on, stoned, in my friend's dorm room...another favorite.

I also like that whole Valley Girl thing with Dweezil Zappa. LOVED that movie Valley Girl when Nicolas Cage was just a kid. Great teen movies... Fast Times at Ridgemont High, The Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles.

Everyone says the 80's were corny and campy. Well so were the 90's and 00's.

Some of the more favorite 80s memories I have are tied to songs:

Hearing "Bette Davis Eyes" while at a meal stop, when my family was making the move out to California.

Double Dutch Bus - hearing this as I went home from the 1982 Rose Bowl Parade (my first one - I'd only lived in CA for a few weeks).

"Juke Box Hero" - got busted lip-syncing/playing air guitar to this one.

"Do You Really Want To Hurt Me?" - I heard this while at my first skating trip in San Diego.

"Controversy" - I heard this for the first time while I was helping to decorate my junior class homecoming float. I suggested that the theme song for the prom should be "Don't Wait For Me" by Morris Day.

"The Family" - got this tape from my first paycheck from Bob's Big Boy.

"Say I'm Your Number One" and "Saturday Love" - I'd hear these songs while I was on one of the walks I used to love to take.

Raspberry Beret and Kokomo (Beach Boys) played back to back by MTV, during a babysitting job.

Oh, and one other that I must not forget - my first day of high school, there was a dance going on in the lunch quad, and the song Atomic Dog came on. It was probably my first time of really seeing people get absorbed by a song. And of course, that infectious beat.
