MySpace Hook-Up With Teen Lands Atlanta Man In Jail

MySpace Hook-Up With Teen Lands Atlanta Man In Jail

POSTED: 11:36 am EST February 22, 2008
UPDATED: 12:05 pm EST February 22, 2008

MARIETTA, Ga. -- Cobb County police say an Atlanta man sexually assaulted a 13-year-old girl he met on MySpace.com.

Police say 22-year-old Nehemiah Musa Wells was arrested Wednesday after the girl's father found him hiding in her bedroom.

"The relationship progressed. It's my understanding that the father of the 13-year-old victim came home yesterday and found the 22-year-old male hiding in her bedroom," Cassie Reece with the Cobb County Police Department told Channel 2's Ross Cavitt.

The Cobb County Sheriff's Office says Wells was charged yesterday with aggravated sexual battery, child molestation and sexual battery.

Cobb police spokeswoman Officer Cassie Reece says Wells started the relationship with the girl on the social-networking Web site last fall.

MySpace supposedly limits membership to people over the age of 14 but investigators say there are few checks and balances built in to the system.

The arrest warrant says Wells first met the girl at her home on November 1st and engaged in sexual intercourse with the girl without her consent at the time.

"It's very important if your children have a MySpace account to monitor it. Go in and see the photos they're putting up on the space. See what kind of contacts their making and the messages back and forth," said Reece.

If I found a 22 year old man hiding in my 13 year old daughters room, the headline would have read....

Father charged with murder of man he found hiding in daughters bedroom. In the gruesome details, the 22 year old perpetrator was savagely beaten, stomped, stabbed, shot.....

Riddle me this Batman...

So if he had sex without her consent in NOVEMBER, isn't that Rape? And if he was there in NOVEMBER what is he doing there in FEBRUARY again?

Something is not right with this story?

she's 13. he can rape her and then tell her he loves her.
13 year olds look for acceptance and 22 year olds look for sex.

I find it interesting that the article doesn't mention the word Rape, even though sex w/out consent = Rape to me. Or maybe it's considered molestation if there is no act of violence.

I also find it interesting that most people zero in on the few facts and not all of them. What was thet guy doing there in February if he had non consentual sex with her in November? It's obvious he is in the wrong and hopefully will go to jail for a long time. But I am always intrigued with the mind of the teenager doing this...twice.

Oh I'm sure he knew she was young and probably didn't even care. He might be 22 but I am sure he is dumb as a brick. Gotta be right? This is so hard for me to fathom, as when I was a kid we were told not to talk to strangers, accept candy, get into a car etc. And that's not what is happening here. WHat is happeneing here is a consensual exchange of notes and ideas (regardless of her fragile mind of 13) on a website. Now he may have approached her, but she accepted to add as a friend, reply to his notes, invite him over had non-consensual sex with him, kept in touch and invited him over again for sex. So, while he is certainly the one who should have done what he did, she should have done what she did neither.

I've never heard about a girl hiding from her boyfriends parents... lol

I get your point, but when you are 22 years old, you shouldn't have to be hiding from your girlfriends parents, if you are legit. That should have thrown up a red flag right there.

And granted, sometimes it is hard to tell exactly how old a girl/woman might be, there are still signs that can give you clues. Unless she totally had fake ID, drove a car, etc.....

if they weren't dating but just hooking up for sex, i can see how he'd still hide, especially if she told him to. shrug

I think parents would be shocked at the situation no matter how old the guy was.

Well, as I always say, she must have given him her address somehow which is THE dumbest thing someone could ever do on the internet.

That is honestly the ONLY way someone can ever truly find you and freakin' hide in your bedroom.

Myspace really needs to crack down on their age security though. I know too many 13 and 14 year olds on there and it's not right for them. They're far from ready to have a myspace at that age.

two girls i had relationships with have told me that their first sexual encounters were at 13, both were fully aware of what they were doing and have no guilty feelings about it. It was also not a case of they did not know what they were doing, one took pics of the whole thing only for her mother to find them, and the the other one openly admits she look 20 when she was 13 and had no objections, she told me she used put strikes on her wall for each time.

before any of the "good" people here tell me they were probably sluts, you are very wrong, I still have contact with both, they are both mothers now, and both successful educationally and in career.

As has been pointed out in several posts here, they met in november, so i think this whole Non-consenual shit goes out the window, but the flaming in the press and here, is wrong IMO.

As for regulating myspace, look at this site first, and then think about regulating.
