Have you ever used Western Union online?

I want to wire some money and discovered you can do this online instead of going to a designated place. Have you done this? If so, any tips or recommendations or warnings? I want to wire some money to my brother in Texas on Friday but I want to make sure he can pick it up right away.

Hey, hon. heart

I did it about six or seven years ago and I remember it was fucking expensive. I wired $400 and it ended up being over $450 altogether. Ugh.

And it was to a 'friend' who promised to pay me back within a week. When I asked him about it, he said he thought it was a gift. After months of arguments and threats, I finally let the shit (and him) go.

God, I was stupid then. I can't believe I'm admitting this on here. lol

Wait, they have their own wiring thingee?

Call your local one and see if you can wire there!

You'll probably have to do it in person, but it would be neat if he could pick it up @ his local Walmart. The lovely Butterfli should know!

My brother just moved there and I want to make sure he has money until he starts his job. I don't want him feeling abandoned and straded out there, ya know? smile

batting eyes Why thank you Richard.....

Okay...let me tell you what just happened to me.... first the disclaimer, I will say is this...this was not entirely Western Unions fault but they were not helpful and if anything helped the guy steal from me.... I purchased an item off of eBay for my son... I was sent an email from someone else claiming to be the person I won the item from.... they sent me an official looking thing with eBay's logo and eveything....the catch... I could only pay for the item using Western Union... they guy took the money...Western Union didn't get proper ID and I was out over $300 dollars....

I would be wary of any online money transfer that is not through your bank, Paypal, etc.

So far, Moneygram's reputation is still top notch. But there are alot of cash scam rings connected to Western Union these days, unfortunately even if it's a face to face transfer vs.online, due to the increasing sophistication of theft identity.

How much of personal information do they need on the online service?

Do they need bank account info from you?

Would a cash gift card (like Visa or Amex) or debit card be a reasonable alternative choice?

There are also many companies online that now present debit cards with liscenced logos from Visa, Mastercard and Amex for families, with the consumers name printed on front to protect usage. They can be "re-filled" at various locations listed througout the country, by the primary cardholder as well as the gift/secondary holder. It's a great tool for students or young relatives, and allows them to make online purchases as well.

yes when you use moneygram it is instant, my daughter has been standing in walmart where she is when I sent the money and as soon as it is in the computer she got it like a minute later for real. so you could call him tell him to get to walmart and get the form to fill out, the first time you use it there is a form for both of you, when he picks up he'll need that form and an ID.
