Celebration of Life: Mothers

Tomorrow is the anniversary of my mom transcending into the next life. For a week I've been blah about the day but then some revelation came to me. Why would I have to be sad.

My mother was FAB!! She was a DIVA. She was loud, FUNNY and didn't know a stranger. In the past few months, my friends have been sharing stories of how my mom would help them in their times of need. My girlfriend told me that she called my mom needing some money. My mom took her out and bought her groceries and gave her some money. My mom never told me a thing. My other friends have similar stories.

My mother was a Coca cola addict. I don't care where she would be, she would have this huge green cup filled with coke. If she was going to someones home for dinner or a bbq, she would have her cup and a 2 liter of coke with her.

She was a FABULOUS seamtress. I have her machines and her sewing stuff.

As I get older, I look more and more like her.

So instead of dreading tomorrow, I'm going to celebrate my moms life. She was GREAT, she was passionate and she will be missed.

So no more sad threads about crying....tell me about something or someone you want to CELEBRATE.

Lovely. A wonderful way to remember your mother.

I had a really, really hard time of it when my paternal grandmother died. She and I were fairly close and we had a special bond that she didn't have with any of her other grandchildren. When her husband passed away, I took over buying her favorite perfume (Chanel No. 5) for every birthday and Xmas for her even though it was quite beyond my means for many years and more extravegent than what I purchased for anyone else. She had an amazing sense of humor (once telling me to stand at the end of her hospital bed so she could throw the potatoes from her dinner at me as it would be both entertaining and enterprising, finding a use for the godawful hospital food). lol
But, like you, the more time goes on, the more I appreicate simply remembering the good things and funny stories and letting go of the hard parts. Of course I still miss her. But it's not something I dwell on anymore.

February 7th would have been my mom's 58th birthday. My mother had tons of friends and was the best cook in Chicago. We didn't get along as mother and daughter but she was my friend. She introduced me to Motown and a love of music and I will always appreciate her for that.

If you don't mind rhonda, I want to join in your celebration thread and celebrate the life of my mother, Allene.

My great grand mother Anita was born on Feb 8th and passed away six year ago Feb 9th, the day after her 97th b-day. She was more influential to my childhood than either one of my parents. They had many issues so my mom-mom cared for me everyday while they worked. She raised my father as her own since her daughter dumped him on her door step. He always called her mom even though she was his grandmother.
Here's to all of our wonderful mothers that are now resting in peace.

I wish I could be like you and feel that I could celebrate my parents death but I just can't, well not yet. My parents were great, they gave their lives to surpporting, fostering and adopting children with special needs. I lost my mum the day before mothers day, I was 7 months pregnant with her first grandchild. I have too much grief left to feel able to celebrate their lives just yet.

You can drink coka-cola all day long and think of your mum. comfort

One day I walked into my aunts house and she screamed because she thought I was my mother. She just cried her eyes out. sad

There are days its a little freaky. My daughter says I act a lot like her. I guess in her absence, she's shining through. smile

Thanks for posting this. The little bit you shared reminded me of my own mom, except she likes Diet Pepsi. I'm down with the Coke though, and hearing of her generosity was very uplifting.

I hope your day is bright tomorrow.

Anxiety

my mother's first birthday since her death would have been earlier this month, and it was really weird for me, because every year for my whole life i always made a big production out of getting her birthday presents. sometimes i get a nagging feeling, like a part of my brain says "you haven't called your mom in AGES, she's going to be pissed" and then of course, i remember...

other than those momentary lapses, i feel like my mom's still around. whenever i hear the beatles or even LOOK at a picture of frank zappa, i feel my mom's spirit because she loved their music so much. whenever i hear people say of passed loved ones "oh, it feels like they're still here", i used to think it was some kind of weird metaphor that i didn't understand - and now i DO understand.

you should think of your mom as a diva instead of being sad. that's how she would have wanted it. my mom had a sharp tongue and she loved using her imagination. she was passionate about justice and she loved music. she wouldn't want to have been remembered for being weak and sick and dying. she accomplished too much for that.

and my mom was a diet coke addict - so maybe our moms are in a diner somewhere in the afterworld gulping down soda together and complaining about how the waiter keeps switching their drinks. lol

Wow Rhonnie.. your mom is very beautiful, and you do look just like her. You inspire me to appreciate my mother more, time is short for us all.

Mom's are precious, everyone is to be celebrated, especially those that yield good fruits, through their children or their work in their community.

Stymie, and Rhonda, my heart to you both. It is no accident that you two are strong minded and grounded beautiful women.

My wonderful mother. She's always given me so much love. I'll never forget the way she supported me during the time I was all over the place and gave up my education to move several thousand miles to be with some girl in Thailand. The other day on the phone she referred to Mon as 'my lovely daughter in law' and it reminded me of how she'd been part of my courage to do what I did.
