My experience was pretty much the same as Imago's except it was about 4 days before I was back on solids. If you're having general anesthetic (and I assume you are) make sure you start moisturising your lips (constantly) a few days before hand. Your mouth gets stretched more than you want to know and your lips will be cracked to bits afterwards. If you keep them as moist as possible they'll still be cracked afterwards, but not as badly. Straws - you'll need them. Slop - any food you can suck through a straw. Plenty of them about. Baby food is quite good too. Beer - natural anesthethic, and can be sucked through a straw. All in all, it's not too bad a surgery to have to undergo. It's pretty quick too, so I wouldn't worry about it too much, you'll be fine. I was told not to suck through a straw until I was healed. Due to the packing and incisions. Just please make sure you go to a surgeon that specialises in extractions Evenstar.

Actually...they tell you not to use a straw. Using a straw can dislodge blood clots around your incisions and cause you to start bleeding. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Imago said: Does anyone know what having a deep cleaning is like?
I'm scheduled for one next Tuesday. There's something irritating the upper gums on the backside of my mouth, and the dentists think it's below the gumline. My teeth are in good shape, I floss religiously, and I get cleanings when I need to. But, I still have to go in and get this stupid deep cleaning crap done. Supposedly, it's different from just a drill and pick cleaning--they're going to numb me up and it'll be nastier? It's not fun but I do it without getting numbed. There's some blood & scraping. I do it in 4 parts, so I don't have to sit there forever. My Legacy

Imago said: veronikka said: all I could taste was blood after I had mine done Did it get rid of the gum irritation? I'm confused. I'm paranoid about my teeth so I floss like a motherfucker. And still, I have to have this done? It creates more space, your gums will be less puffy. It cleans under the gumline. But I never did it because my gums were irritated, only because the Dr said it looked puffy. Try a waterpick & Listerine in the meantime, that always makes my gums feel normal again. My Legacy

The best advice I can give you is to follow every order from the doctor. I had mine out and I felt great after. I ate and I didn't even need the pain meds they prescribed. In fact I felt so good that later that night I was out having margaritas with friends and smoking....
BAD IDEA Dun dun dunnnnn.....dry sockets!!! The absolute WORST pain I have ever felt in my life. The only way the pain would stop is if I went to the dentist to re-scrape the gums to get them to bleed and clot and then pack it with gauze soaked with medicine. The procedure is a piece of cake, I had 3 extracted and one was impacted. Just take care of yourself after (don't party like I did ) and you should be fine.

I just had this done last year. It took about 3 or 4 days. It just feels weird to have gaping holes in your gums and chipmunk cheeks. But other than that its cool Carpenters bend wood, fletchers bend arrows, wise men fashion themselves.

There's a couple factors, if they're above the surface or if they have to cut your gums to get in there. Also, how big are they? Mine was really small and above the surface, so it caused virtually no trauma. My Legacy

Yikes! That's what I'm taking about. My surgeon couldn't stress it enough! No alcohol, smoking, or suction. I was back to work in a couple days, and had the stitches removed early. It's really no biggie if you take it easy and keep the clots intact. Sorry, Carrie. That must have been awful. Oh shit, my hat done fell off

I continued to smoke cigarettes and was out partying like 5 hours later I didn't swell too badly and had minor bruising. I guess one tooth was infected underneath and when the doctor pulled it out puss went flying all over him. I didn't really like him anyway.

I recall eating a burger the second or third day The suturs and healing lasted another week or so after that. It wasn't that bad. And mine were impacted so they had to perform surgery on me--it wasn't just a yank job. Of course, my friend Lenny got his removed at 19, purely a yank job, and his face bruised and swelled up for days. It depends on the person I guess. Either way, better to do it now than wait until you're older. [Edited 2/19/08 10:35am] Same for me....it wasn't a big deal at all I didn't swell or anything....but my brother's face blew up. It really does depend on the person. In spite of the cost of living, it's still popular. |

I was like, "Fuck that," and I cancelled the appointment. About a year ago, one started breaking through the gums and was a little sore--it's at a slight angle and I thought I'd have to get it pulled; but my dentist says it's not messing up my teeth or anything so I don't need it have it removed. The other one is still impacted and I don't have any on the bottom. i've been putting it off for 4 years because they freak me out so much. you're lucky! I didn't escape the IV, though. I had to have foot surgery several years ago and there was no way to do it without being knocked out and having an IV. I was probably around 25, in the pre-op room, whining like a 5 year old about getting an IV put in, while the guy across the room was going to have surgery where they needed to crack open his ribs or something. I'm not gonna lie--I hated the IV. Even thinking about it now grosses me out--but hopefully they'll do the IV then knock you out right away so you don't have to dwell on it. . I had mine out when I was 19. I went shopping that same day. The healing time wasn't bad at all and I even smoked afterwards. My teeth were not impacted but my cheeks still were swollen just a little for the first day. Just make sure you get some drugs. I had IV sedation but a friend of mine said the nitrous worked well and was way less expensive. Shake it til ya make it

I had mine taken out at 20 or 21. I remember the oral surgeon told me how much he liked the Sign O the Times shirt I was wearing.
It took me about a week before I dared to eat solid food. The sockets filled up entirely in about three weeks.

i had all 4 out at once (day surgery)
2 teeth were impacting the teeth next to them- and had to be broken to be removed - i shook 4 half an hour after surgery- due to the anasthesia (sp?) i was 34- and looked like id gone 10 rounds with mike tyson it took at least a wk b4 i could eat again- and that was mushy food then i got an infection in one of the sockets- THAT was worse than child birth i actually got hubby to buy me some whiskey to numb the pain- and i dont drink the infection broke loose during the nite - then with antibiotics- all was good but ur young- it'll all be good seems that i was busy doing something close to nothing, but different than the day before

I had mine removed in September of last year. I had all 4 out.
I had to go under which is good cause I was too nervous to stay awake anyway It took me about a week and a half to really feel back to normal and for all the stitches to dissolve completely. I ice packed my jaw every single day which bought HEAPS of relief and I stuck to soft foods like sandwhiches and mashed up vegetables. My jaw was pretty swollen, I looked like Kanye West I also got some bruising on my right cheek, but it was yellow so it was kinda hard to see. I had some awesome painkillers for the first week too, that knocked me out but got rid of the pain. Not sure of the names though. Oh and you also have to regularly swish your mouth with some anti infectant stuff you know like listerine or something - the one I used was called Savocol, I don't know if you have that where you are but it's great stuff. You have to try to brush your teeth as best you can too because you HAVE to keep your mouth clean while the wounds heal. [Edited 2/20/08 1:02am]
