Muay Thai Kickboxing I know we have some people living in Thailand and of Thai descent in here... Does anyone train Muay Thai Kickboxing? I had to stop a year back due to knee trouble, but now that my knee is doing better I am going to get back into it. Here is a highlight of a Muay Thai fighter, Buakaw, fighting in K1 Kickboxing.
All of the Buakaw Highlights on youtube have somewhat terrible music so you might want to turn it down .

I saw one fight when I was on Ko Phangan, Thailand, 2 months months ago...I liked the atmosphere in the stadion.....but I do not care much for the boxing! I also don't like normal boxing....maybe that's why! [Edited 2/23/08 18:27pm]

No Muay Thai action here in New York I'm afraid.
Although UFC and MMA fights are all the rage on cable TV. By St. Boogar and all the saints at the backside door of Purgatory!

Hopefully, if my friends find an opening in their schedule, we will go this summer.

Actually there is. A former trainer at my gym(I took his boxing/cardio class) is an amateur kick-boxer. I've been to several of his matches. I have the link to his website at my job, and I'll post it Monday.

[Edited 2/23/08 18:27pm] I found the fighting a bore after a few fights if I'm honest. I did like the atmosphere with all the betting going on though. It's just that there's fight after fight, each with the long, drawn out pre-fight rituals, and none of the fights I've ever been to had much action. I've seen some cracking fights on Thai TV though.

Friends of my Mum own apparently the best Muay Thai gym in the UK so it's something I think I'm going to take up on my return. I used to love going to judo when I was younger so it should make me feel good.
I did enjoy going to see the kickboxing in Thailand. We even stayed until the end where they get a couple of guys boxing as we know it. All the gamblers had left at that point! There's Joy In Expatriation.

I used to a long time ago. The hardest workout I've ever done actually. I would almost puke when we were done. I liked it though.
My ex-boyfriend trained, fought, and is an instructor as well. "I saw a woman with major Hammer pants on the subway a few weeks ago and totally thought of you." - sextonseven

It seems the fighters in Thailand take a little bit longer to warm up and to feel out your opponent. In the first round, there is no way to way to win besides knockout. You can't win it by points. So this round is typically pretty boring. I like watching K1 Kickboxing versus a traditional Muay Thai match because it is made for action. Three, three minute rounds make it a sprint. Now, the Muay Thai fighters main weapon is taken away in K1, the elbow, but Muay Thai fighters excel in this league. There is no Ram Muay(the pre-fight dance).

Training is just intense now and being 6ft plus with a massive reach there's really no contest. It's a bit of a sore point.

I don't know any off the top of my head, but there are lots of Muay Thai gyms in NYC. The tournaments are usually hosted by the gyms themselves.

Yes i train in Muay Thai under the instruction of Master Sken in stockport (Greater Manchester, UK). Master Sken is one of the most respected masters in the world and is revered for introducing muay thai to the Uk in the mid seventies along with Grand Master Toddy who now is extremely sucessful in Las Vegas with several champions and gyms.
I am currently brown band after 9 months of training. An excellent and very apllicable martial art in the real world (if called upon in a time of self defence). We also learn the tradition of muay thai like muay boran (ancient fighting technique) and we also are taught ram mauy dances to pay respect to our master. I feel that this is important as many clubs lose these aspects and the art form becomes very westernised.
