The CW's "Girlfriends" Quietly Gets The Ax; Series Ends without Finale
posted on Feb 13, 2008

The CW network quietly cancelled the long-running series "Girlfriends. Monday night's two episodes were the last episodes ever - no goodbye, no farewell, no finale. Cast members were notified by telephone by creator Mara Brock Akil that the network had decided to end the show.
"The prolonged strike has changed business conditions and our programming strategy for the balance of the 2007/08 season. To better focus its creative and financial resources, The CW will only resume production on shows that are in consideration for renewal next year. As a result, we will not order additional episodes of the long-running comedy, `Girlfriends,' which planned to conclude its 8-year run at the end of this season. This was a very difficult decision for us, and was based solely on the considerable cost to license each episode in an extremely unusual business environment," read a statement issued by The CW.

The series, produced by Kelsey Grammer, was in its eighth season and was one year way from being the longest-running African American sitcom in television history. It starred Tracee Ellis Ross, Golden Brooks, Persia White, Jill Marie Jones, Reggie Hayes, Khalil Kain and Keesha Sharp.

Prior to the strike the series had nine remaining episodes to shoot. Series star Tracee Ellis Ross directed the last episode.
The network is reportedly in discussions with Akil and the cast to bring closure to the show with a retrospective special to air this season.

I really think this is a horrible way to end a show like this. shocked sad

Has anyone else seen this article?

I've watched it on a Sunday afternoon occasionally, but I've never been a fan. It's sooooo cheesy!

That one chick that had the kid and kept doing her husbaand wrong, I wanted her to get hit by a bus.

I've seen maybe 3 whole episodes of the show and always wondered why those four people didn't end of killing each other. I sure would have.

Man, I sure do hate this. Though, I thought they should have ended the show last season, I hate they didn't allow William and Monica to give birth in the end.

Girlfriends is one of my favorite shows in modern times. I love all of the cast. The characters were very realistic (especially early on).

Oh well....BET will help the show live on for a while.

I mean, I didn't really watch the show much myself, as it seemed too drama queen. However he darker of the two ladies was extremely believable and tollerable. I haven't seen a black show stay on the air as long as that one or the jeffersons or the cosbys, and mostly ladies being the cast. I wanted to see if it could make ten years (wow ten already?). I hate the fact that they would end the show right before they could make history (I wonder if someone was pissed off at someone on the set). It just seems odd to me and saddening not to go ahead and give the show that, but instead just letting it end without closure, with a couple of shows just airing whenever they get a minute.

sad I like the show. But from the message boards people really missed the character Toni, which I must admit she was my favorite then Joan.

I didn't get into the show until very late - caught Toni's last season & really haven't enjoyed it much since she's been gone, though I kept watching. Joan is still hard to look @ but I'm used to her face now, I think she was a serious reason why I avoided the show before falloff I just thought it was dumb. The humor remained pretty base for the most part but they had some funny stuff here & there. Toni was insane, I loved that character sad & this season was awful - they finally get the heffa proposed to & then send the fiance to Iraq, & the baby stuff... not a lot of joy this season, but it most definitely deserves a proper ending...
heart prince I never met you, but I LOVE you & I will forever!! Thank you for being YOU - my little Princey, the best to EVER do it prince heart

FINALLY.

That show is pure balls.

It was more embarrassing than the Jamie Fox Show and the Parkers combined.

I know that's ur opinion, but how could u put Girlfriends in the same category with the Jamie Foxx show and the Parkers.

Girlfriends did a great job of depicting the different perspectives of young black women. I'm not going to analyze each character, but I will say that the show was needed at the time.

Remember when the show first aired, it was after Living Single had been cancelled. UPN was a startup network and like ALL start up networks in the 90s, they used black shows to get them off the ground. Girlfriends was the first show to display black women as professionals that were friends that were not always bickering and had a ghetto fabulous attitude. Sure, other shows like Living Single showed black women in a positive light, but not like Girlfriends. How many black women were shown as successful lawyers, real estate professionals, legal secretary (I think that's what Maya was) and a highly educated "floater" before this show?

As a black person, it was so nice to see our women presented in a real-life situation. Come on, it's the first time I remember seeing a black woman with her rules of dating.

I'm not going to diss shows like The Parkers and Jamie Foxx because they have their place in black television history. I'm not saying these shows are bad (though I never cared for the Jamie Foxx show because he was too over the top for my taste), but they were successful and people still enjoy them today.

That's a shame. I recall, years ago, "A Different World" being done the same way. And then the fans created an uproar, and the show got the proper send-off.

It's a shame, when certain viewerships get treated that way. Sends a bad message that advertisers watch closely.

I'm not a fan of the show, but I would hate to see move this affect programming and writing decisions at that network in the future.

Those chicks couldn't act to save their lives. The material they had made the worst "Mama I Wants a Good Mayne" chitlin play look like Shakespeare. The fact that the characters are lawyers DOES NOT make all the dancing, basketball playing, and assorted stereotypical and degrading imagery and material progressive.

If you're over the age of 14 and you don't have a bucket of Jam in your hair, you have no business watching this crap. I'm glad it's gone, and I wish people would stop supporting this budget crap.

I'm not "amazed" that the show got cancelled. As a matter of fact, I thought the show should have ended last year with the engagement party.

This year was pretty bad, but I still supported the show. They took a few risks this season, but none of them paid off. (Maya being an addict, Lynn in the music business, etc.).
